  1. El Niño + Los Angeles + Bees = ?????

So the NOAA is predicting a strong, sustained El Niño for the 2015/2016 winter and spring.

For those of you in Southern California who kept bees (and good notes!) during the last strong El Niño in...

Re: Extractor-less honey by Flow Hive

    Yup. That was me :D

I'm unlikely to go into this business any time soon, seeing as though I've had one hive for 13 months and one hive for 3 months, and I've yet to harvest a single drop of honey...

Re: Is CO2 the best way to kill a hive?

Yup. The comb collapses and you get a big mass of honey-soaked dead bees at the bottom. Not fun to clean up.

Pretty neat! "More than Honey" also has some amazing footage.

Re: Bear Attack how to clean up

Meh. Of all the things our government could be spending money on, I think this one actually makes sense. Controlling bears is something you don't want to "learn by doing" because it can get you...

    Other ways to control mating?

Apparently this is the "right" way to do it, but it requires equipment and non-trivial expertise. It also requires "popping" a drone to "evert its endophallus" which just seems downright medieval....
  7. Re: Requeen + 12 days. Some older, open brood, but that's it.

Yeah, I think everything's going to be fine. I took a peek this morning (day 22) and there's quite a bit of capped worker brood. Since all of the old queen's worker brood should have emerged by now,...
  8. Re: New beekeeper... Requeening an aggressive hive

My feral hive was _very_ hot a month ago. Whenever I worked that hive I double-bagged myself--jeans and a long-sleeved sweatshirt, then a full suit and veil. Gauntlets on my hands and gaiters over my...

    Re: Plastic foundation issues.

I brought some Acorn frames home from The Valley Hive and set them on the floor of my garage. Within 5 minutes I had bees in my garage, walking all over the frames. So they definitely smell like...
  10. Re: Requeen + 12 days. Some older, open brood, but that's it.

Thanks; I hadn't thought about it this way. I'll check again on Friday morning, and if she's still laying poorly I'll donate a frame. Or maybe I'll move a drawn comb over from the donee colony first,...
  11. Re: Requeen + 12 days. Some older, open brood, but that's it.

So I checked again today (requeen + 17 days) and there's a small amount of open brood, so she's still alive and laying, just not laying very much.

I'll keep checking weekly and see if she gets...

    Re: first year honey?

So they might move honey down into the brood box.

But would they ever move honey _upward_ into the harvestable supers?
  13. Re: Requeen + 12 days. Some older, open brood, but that's it.

If I don't want to donate a full frame of eggs from my youngish package colony, could I cut out a section of comb with eggs, rubber-band that into a frame, and donate that?

Or am I just asking for...

    Re: first year honey?

Assume he/we feed until the brood boxes have some stores, and then put supers on top for "real" honey.

Do the bees move honey around in the hive? Would they ever move the "sugar honey" up into...

Re: Bees won't move into new box

I had the exact same problem last year. I have a deep and a medium, so I couldn't move a frame from the bottom deep to the medium, so someone suggested that I move a medium frame into the deep....
  17. Re: Why do Male Drones Bees Die after mating mating

Every drone thinks he's top gun pilot. Little does he know he's actually a kamikaze pilot.
  18. Re: Requeen + 12 days. Some older, open brood, but that's it.

Thanks for the replies. The have only 2 colonies, and the other one is a package that I installed on 8 April, so it doesn't have too much to donate right now.

I'll check again in a few days. If I...
  19. Requeen + 12 days. Some older, open brood, but that's it.

I de-queened my hot, feral hive on the morning of 14 May and installed a new queen that same evening. This morning (day 12, counting 15 May as day 1) I inspected the hive, and the queen cage was...

    Re: Aficanized bees are fake

I just requeened that feral hive last week with a VSH x Italian cross from Broke-T, so I'm hoping it cools down a bit. I'll check Tuesday to see if she's laying.

I don't want to check tomorrow or...

    Re: Aficanized bees are fake

I read the article, and the author clearly doesn't know much about bees:

Anyone who keeps bees or talks to beekeepers wouldn't use "swarm" in that sentence.

    Re: Aficanized bees are fake

Heh. That first hive looks like my feral hive. When I pop the top cover it's like someone is slingshotting bees at my veil.

My second hive, purchased as a package from Bill Bee's in Tujunga, is...
  23. Re: the bee and butterfies are getting help from the Government finally!

While they were at it, they should have declared varroa illegal, so we could deport them all.

But seriously, a small amount of government attention, properly focused, could do some good right...

    Re: Adventures in Observation Hives

    Fascinating!

How difficult would it be to engineer a small section of an OH to induce this type of visible cross-sectioned comb building? Without interfering with the rest of the "normal" OH...
  25. Re: Will a newly-introduced queen suppress development of emergency queens?

I decided to stop fretting and just get on the plane. I'll check on Monday, which will bee 10 days from hanging. If she's not laying, then I can start fretting again :D
