Re: They're... Licking the Entrance Reducer?

I agree with DJ. try a search in the forums on washboarding and you'll find someone posted a video showing the bees on the front porch moving back and forth. It might be what your girls were up to...
  2. Re: Getting bees out of a house - please offer your 2 cents

look up the "hogan trap out box" and his description on how to use it. He says he has a very good capture rate for getting the queen and all bees out and into the box.

Re: 1 lb containers with lids & labels

I printed my own last year. Used the Avery labels from office supply store and downloaded the template online. Add your own picture and text and your printer does the rest.

    Re: only one pesty bee

Sounds like a very nice neighbor. Probably should keep the "6 week" detail to yourself and let him enjoy telling the story :)

  6. Re: Sold off frame equipment, going to Top Bars

    welcome, neighbor.
best of luck with your top bar hives. I made a KTBH and the bees overwintered in it very well.
    Good luck.
  7. Re: Keeping the queen from laying w/o an excluder

My normal setup is 2 deeps and a medium all year except when adding honey supers. I'm sure that's overkill but I like to make sure they have enough food stored up for any kind of winter. I've been...

    Re: Transporting Packaged Bees

Never transported 10 in the cab with me but did go a couple of hrs with 5 in my ranger (non-extended cab). They were very docile and there were no flyers inside the cab. I did take a bottle of...

Re: Bee o pac assembly jelp

it's been a while since I tried those but I seem to remember you put them back to back and then pop out the "bumps" on the strips and use those as locking pieces thru the holes in the sides of the...

    Re: Caught my first swarm

Catching swarms is definitely one of the best parts of beekeeping (imo). I agree with the other post-ers and would definitely get the other 6 frames in ASAP. The girls really do build up comb very...

    Re: Ant problem??

sounds a lot like varroa problems. deformed wings are one of the key indicators as it's one of the diseases the mites carry and pass to the hosts (the bees).

Re: How to feed a Top Bar Hive

I used a jig saw to cut a hole for the boardman feeder on the end of the hive. no entrance there. just the feeder in a tight fit. seems to work alright.

    Re: Orienting flights in January?

The queen continues to lay eggs throughout the winter to make up for losses due to age or other reasons. She just doesn't lay as many as she does in spring and summer because they have to stay...

    Re: Blackberries Good?

I have blackberries literally 10 feet in front of the hives (keeps them from being seen from the street). They bloom pretty early in the spring and the bees love them. We had a bumper crop of...

    Re: Does salt kill SHB?

I don't know about the salt but I have used Diatomaceous Earth in my SHB traps and it definitely kills 'em dead. Just make sure the bees can't get to it or it'll do the same to them.

    Re: Almond Extract

I have used the artificial almond extract the last 2 spring harvests and it does work. It's not fast, but if you're not in a big hurry, it'll do the job. I don't know about the real almond extract...

    Re: Source for top bars

That's what I did to make mine. The cove molding and some staples and wood glue and the girls build straight comb hanging from it.
  20. Re: not eating syrup ..fermenting feed (i think)

I agree with rmdial... I have 3 hives and every one of them is acting differently when it comes to syrup.
If you add HBH to the syrup, (recipe can be found on this site in the forum) it will help...
  21. Re: Feeder for top bar feeder has anyone tried this?

I took a jigsaw and cut out a slot in the end that would just allow the boardman feeder to fit in. Of course, this was done BEFORE the bees were installed. I don't have a detailed pic but there is...

I had never heard of 'heater' bees or 'filling station' bees. Very cool video. Sorry if it's been covered before in the forums.
