    Re: Persistent Varroa

I haven't kept bees for very long but the way i look at the varroa problem is that it needs to be managed or the majority of bees will die out.
I am not going down the route of ramming chemicals...

    Re: Persistent Varroa

OA vaporization has problems when the bees are clustered for winter. it cannot penetrate the cluster.

Re: reusing hive after wax moths

    they look ok.
when they get really dark and dirty looking it can be a small factor in bees absconding.

    Re: sick hive

there are easy tests you can do to help you find out if it's afb.
    matchstick test seems easiest.
plenty of information about it if you google it.

    Re: Fumagillin - Dead Bees

    why use it??
it isn't effective and can have detrimental effects on the bees if used in the wrong concentration.

Possible synergic effects between pesticides and N. ceranae were previously...
  8. Re: MAQS strips and the colder weather?? And wax moth invasion

a lot of people in the uk have lost queens when using maqs in cold weather.
it is classed as a fumigant not a treatment like apiguard and other products.

it does seem like a good product but...

    Re: Started fogging today.

if you leave a board under for 7 days and count the dropped varroa there is a calculator on bee base site that will tell you how many of the little buggers are in the hive and if you need to treat .

do you treat while they still have brood in the hive?
    why vaporize it ?
  15. Re: I don't understand this complaint about treatment free beekeepers

most of the varroa approved treatments here are based on essential oils but cannot be used until after honey harvest.
  16. Re: I don't understand this complaint about treatment free beekeepers

if your hive gets afb in the uk it gets burned.

also we have inspections from the bee inspector to check hive health etc.
