  1. Re: Trying to decide if I should buy and extractor.

Thanks for all the reply's. That home made on looks great PaBill but I'm not that ambitious. I'm trying to get the wife to approve the up gradable Maxant. :D
  2. Re: Trying to decide if I should buy and extractor.

I think if I go for an extractor I would go with the Maxant. I just have talk myself into spending more than what I was prepared to. Lot's more benefits to buying something like this though.
  3. Trying to decide if I should buy and extractor.

I have two hives and probably won't get anymore. So I'm wondering if I should purchase an extractor. I have used the crush method and I'm fine with it but isn't it better to give the bees back comb...
  4. Re: How do you think my 2nd year hive is doing?

Thanks for the feedback everyone I appreciate it.

I like your plan Ray. After I spin out the honey how do I store the frames until next year?
  5. Re: How do you think my 2nd year hive is doing?

Is this a dumb question? :o
  6. When should I start feeding my split?

I did a split this April but didn't get a queen to take until middle of May. The colony has fully filled a deep super with bees but has not drawn any comb. They are still using the original 4 frames...
  7. How do you think my 2nd year hive is doing?

I have two hives. The first one was started last spring and I split it this spring. I just went by to do a site check and saw lots of coming and going on the new split but didn't see anything...

    Re: Honey Bees on Lavender

Yep they are very busy! I wonder if they are a little slower first thing in the morning? Try using the same focus method your camera uses when in the sports preset but try using manual mode.

    Re: Honey Bees on Lavender

These were all shot at F/16 using a Canon 100mm Macro on a 5D Mark III with some fill flash. I have done multiple exposures and then stacked them for even more DOF but didn't do it on these.

I had one hive I started last year and they exploded this spring so I split them. I waited 1 month and no new queen so I added a frame with two queen cells and it has been anther 22 days. The cells...

Re: I think I have wax moths :-(

Definitely Wax Moth as Larvae are to big for beetles. I'll pull the eaten frame and any that don't have a lot of Bees on them.

My plan for a new Queen is to wait a few weeks and see if the...

This is my second year so I have nothing to compare it to but it seems my original hive has a lot of honey. The hive consists of two deep supers and I added a medium about two weeks ago. The new...

    I think I have wax moths :-(

During inspection of my first hive split I noticed strings of pollen on one of the frames. Then on closer inspection saw a trail eaten through the comb. Just before closing it up I saw a 1" white...
  21. My first experience with bee aggresstion

This is the second year of bee keeping for me. I was doing a hive inspection last weekend and it started out fine. I'm pretty sure it was when I decided to scrape off comb that was on a frame bottom...

I think my split was a dud

This is day 29 of the split and I just did the first inspection. According to my calculations if all went well I should have seen eggs, larvae, and no capped brood but it was the opposite. I saw no...
  23. Re: Bees eating large pupae on frame bottom

Thanks all I wish I would have taken a photo. They may have been drone pupae. Now I think about it their eyes were pretty big.
  24. Bees eating large pupae on frame bottom

I did a split March 16th on my first hive started April of last year. I located the queen before the split and it appeared she was doing her job well. Yesterday I did my first inspection of the...

Re: Don't think split is working.

It's day 21 of the split and all seems well. I made a 30 day chart so I could see at a glance what stage the new colony should be in. According to my calculations if all went well the new queen...
