  1. Re: Established yard, Mite tolerant/resistant, and desiring some other traits

I haven't seen the signs of swarming. Cells, bearding, etc, but you make a good point. I use 10 frame. 1 deep > 1 or 2 Mediums for winter store, and everything above that I keep.
  2. Re: Established yard, Mite tolerant/resistant, and desiring some other traits

All good info. My Nucs are from Swarms. I haven't split much, because I travel a lot internationally, and respond to US and International Disasters. So my job has handicapped me some. I kind of...

Thanks Sqaurepeg. Noticing your quote below of journaling your treatment free apiary. What type of bees did you go with to achieve treatment free? I'm still wondering if I should introduce some...
  4. Re: Established yard, Mite tolerant/resistant, and desiring some other traits

They do not swarm too awfully bad. I've only had 2 maybe 3 swarms this year, and two of those were from my NUC. I have 7 Hives or Nucs in my yard. I'm seeing some folks getting 1 or 2 more supers...
  5. Established yard, Mite tolerant/resistant, and desiring some other traits

    All,

I have successfully had a mix survivor stock for about 7 years now. Originally started with some Russians, then introduced some VSH, and then inherited a survivor hive that originally came...

    First go at grafting success

Looks like I got 6 capped queens out of 10 on my first ever graft. Most of the cells seem short to me though. I don't have pictures but is that typical?

Re: How many have switched to Carniolan?

As a first time beekeeper two years ago starting out with two Italian hives was very depressing. Heavy mite loads, had to treat like crazy and still lost both of them. They all died away from the...

I'm not sure who your supplier was, but I have two hives of them, and one was of mild to hot nature, the other not so bad. This time of year they are all fiesty in my opinion because they are trying...
