  1. Re: Why would workers ball young queen in a nuke?

the fact that you saw it after opening the hive should have been your first clue. just basic beekeeping. many on here have the same problem with package bees. they look for a queen soon after the...
  2. Re: Why would workers ball young queen in a nuke?

one reason for bees balling the queen is caused by the beekeeper opening the hive too soon with a young queen. experienced beekeepers leave alone for a few weeks.
  3. Re: Packing organic honey without certification

honey is certified. not the packer. there is no organic honey produced in the us. you will have to buy from south America and package. I think you need to do some homework.
  4. Re: Is there a viable business in "Bees Only"?

the farther north you go the harder it is to raise queens and packages. that's why most queens and pkgs come from the south. that's why nucs have been more popular in the north.

Re: What Books for CHRISTMAS ?

marla spevak has a good book. the laidlaw book is somewhat outdated and more commercial. some people are disappointed with the ninicot system.

    Re: Drum pump for honey

the only thing I could add to smokepole is the drum cart that is made to lay the barrel down safely. this is your least expensive way to get small amounts out.

Re: Should a new beek start with langs?

beekeeping started in straw skeps and evolved into langstroth hives. why go back back to non practical methods.

    snl
when we move bees south they always brood up due to the move. what mark is doing is probably good as he is giving extra protein as they rear new bees.

    Re: Baggie Feeder

we have fed quite a few hundred with bags. hive has to be level and probably most important is filling the bag half full. we use 1 gallon freezer bags and put in 2 quarts.
  17. Re: People actually make a living with honey production??

ok for example lets say a guy and his wife work for a commercial guy for a few years and take nucs as part of their pay. after a few years they build up to 600 hives and start for themselves. the...

Re: What to do with pollen cells?

If you have to do something with it give it back to the bees in the spring. they would have a better use for it in march and april.
  19. Re: Free Shipping Rant (Beekeeping Equipment Big Box Stores)

In the end the product cost the same to the buyer so what difference does it make. there is no free lunch. a company has to make at least 30% to stay in business.
  20. Re: They say Americans are getting grumpy about the never ending rising prices these

the cost of agricultural supplies is often tided to the end product. If the price of corn or soybeans goes up soon the price of seed fertilizer tractors etc soon follow. my price for honey is the...

Re: Should Holes Be Sealed With Wax Or Tape?

from my 3 yrs as a nys bee inspector some of the best hives observed in the spring were abandoned hives full of holes. this probably was a result of no beekeeper helping them.
  24. Re: Frame top bars popping off, seeking opinions from the group

kind of late now depending on the weather. maybe best just to leave them alone until spring. every frame does not need bee space under it. It does show how important the horizontal nail or staple in...
