Re: My recipe/method for sugar blocks

Lots of chat about how to form and dry Lauri's sugar bricks. Pans, dehydrators, oven settings. I mixed mine in a bucket with a paint stirrer on a drill, then scooped it into brown paper lunch sacks....

    Re: Management Strategy Impasse

So is it safe to say that if you didn't have the "late summer/fall dwindle" that your current business plan would be a success?

I cannot bring myself to help choose options 1-4 without an...

    Re: Witness to Regicide

I had the same thing happen this summer. But now wondering if the destruction of the queen cells sent out some form of pheremone that signaled an attack on the hive. Also when you split the boxes...
  4. Putting together beginner bee domonstration

So I have decided to give back some of what has been given to me and begin to teach and mentor other beginning beekeepers. For the demonstrations, I am good on equipment but am lacking audio/visual...

Re: The 150 rule (heat plus humidity)

+1 on the cool vest! I worked for years in the hazmat industry, you know, the guys in the white tyvek suits cleaning up spills. We had the cool vests and they make a huge difference, but you can make...
  6. Cell starter packed with bees or walk away splits raising queens

So I have been following all the "grafting trouble" threads of late and have a question.

I fully agree that to get a good "take" with grafts/cut cells the most important thing is for the cell...

Re: Another Propane Fogger Oxalic Acid Idea

Oh I have not given up yet! I could modify the input side of the fogger. Still thinking about it.

Re: Another Propane Fogger Oxalic Acid Idea

I dont think the acid will mix with an oil. Most acids are degreasers. Maybe chemguy can help with the quest?

Re: Another Propane Fogger Oxalic Acid Idea

So I spent the morning in the workshop tinkering with the Burgess propane fogger. It turns out that I cannot get this apparatus to produce the kind of steamy fog that I had hoped. It does fantastic...

Re: Another Propane Fogger Oxalic Acid Idea

Thanks for the confirmation Chemguy. I thought it should be the same.

So does OA kill as a contact pesticide ie. acid burn on the exoskeleton of the mite? Or the sharp crystals scraping away the...

Re: Another Propane Fogger Oxalic Acid Idea

Exactly! While the dribble method is more labor intensive, I could do it. However, I run 3 mediums as a brood nest so it would require removal of one box to the ground then tilting of the second....

Re: Another Propane Fogger Oxalic Acid Idea

It is my understanding that the acid forms crystals within the hive as it cools from a vapor when using a heated vaporizer. I can attest to this as I had bees exiting the hive with white crystals all...

Re: Another Propane Fogger Oxalic Acid Idea

Exactly what I was thinking! Recent reading here on Beesource has led me to think that as the dribble evaporates, it leaves behind the active crystals.

Re: Another Propane Fogger Oxalic Acid Idea

Am I safe to assume that if OA works as a heated vapor and it works as a wet room temperature dribble, it will also work somewhere in between these 2 temperature ranges as a roughly 200 degree...

Re: Another Propane Fogger Oxalic Acid Idea

I would think that a gram delivered by vaporization is fully integrated into the hive. I would think that a gram delivered by dribble method assuming 20% of the dribble runs off would be actual .8...

Another Propane Fogger Oxalic Acid Idea

So lets get past the "it's not approved in the US for beekeeping" thing right off. I know, but if I want to treat my hives, they are my hives.

After much study, the 2 most common methods of...

    Re: OTS Queen Rearing

I had the same results this year from the OTS system. Made 10 splits and all made new fat queens. I don't think I'll be needing that grafting tool after all.
