    Re: howdy from south carolina

I would not split this late in season unless you can purchase a mated queen. In South Carolina they will not need that much honey to carry over winter, I would extract some of the honey, two deeps...

  5. Re: new hive has 3 queens cells started.....now what?

I would just leave them alone, several more cells and I may split again.

    Re: Backfilling

Is cup on bottom of frame ? I would not consider only one queen cell swarm prep. They may be building just in case they need to replace the queen. They often build but may not use.

Re: When do you stop adding supers........

I agree with Vance, why not extract as they go? Start selling honey now, place supers right back on hives. Spreads out the work for you and produces you the chance to get honey to customers before...
  8. Re: What? Swarm left hive, tornadoed around, then went BACK IN. What?

The queen was not with them, they will swarm again real soon
  9. Re: How do I encourage a new hive to expand into the second super?

Not sure I would move brood unless there is lots of brood, but I would move a couple of drawn frames up to encourage them to move up.

    Re: straining honey

A paint strainer is just fine, that is always what I use. Forcing thru may cause air bubbles , but the paint strainer will not make the honey taste strange, that is unles it was already used on paint.

  14. Re: New inexperienced queen or laying worker?

There is likely a queen there, bee more often then not get it right . Did they swarm or just replacing the queen? If cells were on bottom of frames it may be they swarmed, if on middle of frames...

  16. Re: Help! Bee poop and now beardingish thing...

I suspect your hive is about to swarm, I noticed boarding on one of my hives last week, two days later it swarmed. Thankfully I captured it.
