  1. Re: What species did Apis Mellifera displace in North America?

I have wondered how we would ever know what was displaced. As those species may be extinct. I am not a Euro-hater, just someone with a background in Bio Science. And am sad to watch the invasion...
  2. Re: What species did Apis Mellifera displace in North America?

We also brought carp, starlings, English sparrows and the cat which kills millions of other animals for fun.
    We are not so smart.

    Re: Melting wax cappings

I wash mine in lake water. One of the books I read was that chlorinated water can make wax into a gummy mess. I just use a 5 gallon bucket to soak it in. Then pour it into a colander and dip up...

    Winter Airflow

Getting ready to wrap my 4 hives for the winter. I have a 2 inch vent cut in my inner cover edge. Is this enough for the winter.
I use a Dadant mouse guard on the bottom.
    Your thoughts.

Re: Carrying a few queens on airplane

I get patted down and scanned often at the airport security. And I am a 64 year old white male.
I would not want them to find an undeclared package.

Re: When does the webbing come

I had a hive that failed, bees left, hive infested.
I just took all the frames to the pond and scraped off everything. Let the fish eat the bugs.

Re: Useless tools or beginners luck?

Get a metal bucket to carry your tools. That and a smoker is all I carry. Love it. I do wear a suit and boots. I started using the boots after crushing bees under my feet while wearing low tops.
  8. Re: aggressive racoon, or fox?, climbs 12 feet, flips heavy lids, eats comb, trap set

I always tie a 50 foot rope to the trap. That way if I catch Mr. Skunk he can go for a swim at the pond.
Not being mean but here most skunks test positive for rabies.

    Re: Beware of the Birds!

I nailed a big rubber snake above my gutter to keep the woodpecker from beating it to death.

    Re: Frame/Foundation Rotation

I am a hobby beekeeper with 3 hives. My hives are 3 years old.
I will start replacing the deep frames with wax foundation when spring arrives.
How long will it take to replace all the frames?

Re: Aggressive Bees - I'm looking for help!

Bait a live trap. They sell them at a number of stores. Tie a rope to it. If you catch a skunk you have to drag it away and drop it into a pond. That's about the only way to get rid of a skunk. ...

    Re: wax worm frames

Get some payback. Take wax worms fishing. Put them on a very small lead head feathered jig. They are the best bait for large bluegill and crappie I have ever found.
I catch 15 inch crappie on them...

I am new here, but have been reading the forums for several months.
I do not live where I can try this. But I am wondering if it would act as a control of mites and shb.
