Re: When Should I See New Eggs...

    Thanks!

I split the hive and separated the queen into the split, so it technically was not a true swarm. I caught them just in time. They capped the first queen cell about two days later. So to be...

When Should I See New Eggs...

...from a swarmed hive? I saw queen cells (4) about a week ago. When I checked yesterday, the bees were tearing down the last of the queen cells.

Question: how long from when the swarm happened...

    Re: ONE really angry bee

Sounds like a good guard bee to me!

If it were tons of bees looking for ways to get inside your clothes or attacking your face, I'd say you have a hot hive, but only one sounds like a good guard...

    Re: Re-Queening FAIL

    UPDATE:
Hive #1 - Checked, they seem pretty chill. I removed the cork over the candy side. Fingers crossed. They are nearly broodless, so hopefully just "sad" enough to accept this queen.
    Hive #2...

    UPDATE:
Hive #1 - I left alone. Tomorrow, I check to see if the bees are clinging to the front of the queen cage.
Hive #2 - They had built more queen cells! They are using older larvae at this...

    Re: Re-Queening FAIL

That's the thing. I never heard the keen. When I first offered the new queen, the bees would put their nasonov glands up and they twitted their wings. They sounded HAPPY to see the new queen...even...

    Re: Re-Queening FAIL

I always feed 1:1 when re-queening. Those bees are back filling the brood nest, so I'm not sure how much more to give them.

Not sure about a defective queen. If so, that would mean all three...

    Re: Re-Queening FAIL

I'm afraid a direct release will result in a balling. When I place the cage near the bees, they want to ball the cage.

You are right, they are almost out of larvae the appropriate age to make...

    Re-Queening FAIL

So I'm making splits of my three strongest hives. My splits were simulated swarm splits - removing the queen to another hive along with some brood, etc. I removed queen cells from the old hives....

Re: Empty brood boxes- what to do?

Dave, that is exactly what I did. Since they are strong, there should be enough bees to cover both small brood areas. You are right on with my plan, but I needed to have a second opinion. THANKS!

Re: Empty brood boxes- what to do?

    Dave,

The deep is the only box with undrawn frames. The three mediums are completely full. I am wondering if I should move the deep to the top so I can remove it or feed from the top and hope the...

    ROBBING

My entire apiary is under attack. Seven total hives, four big and three small. Aside from reducing entrances, adding robbing screens, and placing a sheet over the hives, is there anything else I can...

Re: Empty brood boxes- what to do?

I have what seems like a similar problem. I've been out of pocket for the summer and had someone help with my hives. Went through one yesterday and found the main brood box (DEEP) to have three and a...

Re: Capped Queen Cell Looks Strange Today

Hmm, I've never heard of the bees helping the queen out. Always thought she chewed her way through.

Either she is emerging or she is dead.

Capped Queen Cell Looks Strange Today

Today I briefly checked the nuc that has a capped queen cell in it. The tip of the cell looked removed and I could see some fuzzy white stuff. Are the bees tearing down the queen cell or is something...

    Booming Hives

How frequently should I check my boomer hives this spring? Trying to toe the line between staying on top of swarms and too many inspections.

    Re: Black Honey Bees ??

Off topic: Doesn't it look like a queen may have emerged from one of those queen cells? There is a cell hinge at the bottom.

Last year had a girl see me at the chicken coop from the entrance of her hive (about 15 feet away) and made a beeline to my upper lip. I saw her coming and was able to brush her off before too much...
