    Re: No eggs in hives

Are you feeding syrup and sub ?With that much weather one would almost have to. Last year was my first year. I grossly underestimated the feed requirements of a hive and they all shut down. I...

    Re: new nuc installed

It's very doubtful that the queen was injured during your transfer. In fact not tearing apart the frames when you transferred probably helped insure her safety (Good Job!). I am in my sophomore...
  3. Re: Wax cell cups queen rearing on a large scale.

I'm finding that my success rate have less to do with what type of cups I'm using. I find that the quality of my cell builder and introducing open brood four days before I graft has helped me with...
  4. Re: Wax cell cups queen rearing on a large scale.

I know one large queen breeder that only uses wax due to higher acceptance rates. I've used both plastic and wax and had a higher acceptance rates with wax.

The queen next door was missing and a different breed than the batch I had going.
  8. Two Steps forward and one step back!http://www.beesource.com/forums/images/smilies/sc

The ultimate "don't count your chickens before they hatch" story. My fourth round grafting, I had an 83% take; big beautiful cells; more than I could use so I had the extras sold. On day 8 I go to...

Re: Best time to put on roller cages?

Hey Michael, I am not using an incubator and the cells are too big in diameter by the time day 10 rolls around would you advise trimming them.

  12. Re: five for five introducing newly hatched virgins

I've had 100% success introducing virgins using Lauri's method. If you look on youtube she has a video showing how to introduce a virgin by pulling a frame of honey and releasing the newly hatched...
  13. Re: Don't ever get to big for your britches or count your chickens before they hatch

Matt I could go on for pages, every time I get too big for my britches I inevitably get knocked down again. I have been doing reasonably well with grafting on the first three tries. The fourth, I go...

Best time to put on roller cages?

Quick question.... is there any harm in putting on roller cages just after cells are capped. I find if I wait until a day or two before cells are scheduled to hatch, the cells are to big for the...

Re: Easiest type of cell builder for a beginner

    David,

This is my second year at trying to be a beekeeper. I am raising my own queens now for increase. I tried the Cloake board method and had mediocre results. I read your article on the five...
  16. Re: How do you apply the lemon grass oil or swarm commander on a swarm trap?

Take a small piece of cotton-like material and put a few drops on it and put in in the box. I put mine on the floor near the entrance.

Re: One small success, one giant step!

Try again! So far 2 of the seven have hatched; one cell that I thought did not take hatched out into the queen less cell builder so I actually had 8 out of 12 take. Luckily the rest of my unhatched...

One small success, one giant step!

Tried grafting a dozen queens using the Cloake board method and a strong over wintered hive. Out of 12 grafts, I had 2 take(discouraging!) I had one hatch early (into a roller cage) and left it in...
