    Re: New "Texas" Top Bar

That would be a bird feeder for feeding suet cakes. I don't think the bees will be interested in the suet.

    Re: Splitting a Top-bar hive

Would it work to take random bars, but in the new hive alternate comb with empty bars, allowing the bees to build out the new empty bars to fit inbetween the existing comb with the proper beespace?

Re: Left over honey, what can I use it for?

Mr. Bush, are you saying to let the original hives keep it for their broodrearing, or is it ok to spread it out between the originial hives, and the new packages for their brood rearing?

Re: Left over honey, what can I use it for?

Thanks Praxis178, I hadn't even thought ahead to getting some fresh honey. Now my mouth is watering thinking about it. I think I'll take your advice and give some to the new packages, and wait for...

Left over honey, what can I use it for?

My two tbh that I started from packages last year made it through the winter and have several full bars of honey left over, as well as several partial bars. They are very active and are bringing in...

    Re: First full inspection- Questions

I was wondering what the odds are that the queen is in the pile of dead bees on the bottom. Does she have the same chance of dying in the winter as the rest, or is she more hardy, protected better by...

    Re: Bees favorite plant

Yellow Crownbeard, a nasty weed here in Virginia, is teeming with bees in the late summer/early fall. I think most of my winter stores came from this weed. Funny to think that a couple of years ago,...

    First full inspection- Questions

It hit 58 deg F today here in SW Virginia, so I popped open my two ktbh to see what is going on. These hives were started from packages last March, and seem to have survived their first winter. There...

Re: Question on reusing old top bar combs

I won't say they made it yet, but there seem to be a lot of bees in them. When I open the front bars on a 50 deg day, they come flowing out the opening and are difficult to get closed back up. I...

Re: Question on reusing old top bar combs

I too was wondering about reusing comb. I have some empty combs from 2 current tbh and have 2 new packages coming next month. Would it be helpful to the new packages to put a couple of empty combs in...

Re: Feeding Pollen Patties to Top Bar Hives

I attached 1 inch mesh chicken wire in a U-shape basket to an empty bar using a staple gun, slide the pollen patty into the U-shaped basket, and place the bar at the front of the brood nest. I too...

Re: What is NORMAL for October 1?

Shannon and Lee, Thank you for the replies.
I will check again at the end of this week, looking closely for eggs/larvae/brood, with my glasses on this time. That was my biggest concern, as I didn't...

Re: What is NORMAL for October 1?

Joseph, I understand what you are saying about each hive being an individual, and "normal" for that hive may be different than "normal" for another hive. However, the normal that my question refers...

What is NORMAL for October 1?

I inspected my 2 TB hives Sept 23, and found lots of bees covering each comb, 10+ bars of capped honey, 10+ bars 1/3 to 1/2 filled with capped honey and uncapped nectar, and the brood bars at the...
  15. Re: Several questions re new hives from packages

"Did your son’s hives have open screened bottoms? "

They did. His hives are much bigger than mine, with the screened bottom being 8 or 10 inches wide. Mine are solid bottoms and only 6" wide.
  16. Re: Several questions re new hives from packages

thank you. I will remove the wax at the next inspection, and look more closely for eggs. I was a little nervous, and wanted to get the hives back together quickly. It was my first inspection. I did...
  17. Several questions re new hives from packages

Last week I asked about installing two packages in the same evening. I got several good suggestions (thank you) and I decided to install on consecutive evenings. In one, installed last Thursday 3/29,...

Thank you all for your input. What I have decided to do is install both packages in the same evening, and to release the queen right into the bees. You experienced guys seem to agree that that's ok...

I am making my first install this Wednesday. I have two TBH side by side. Is there any problem installing the packages one right after the other? Also, I am going to use bucket feeders right behind...
