I agree with Enjambres. Add supers according to progress, not time. And progress is indeed non-linear. As population increases, so does progress. IMO, a new beekeeper should check every week or 10...
The bees in the package are most likely Italians, with a caged Russian queen.
I just put it out dry. I don't believe the shelf life lasts until next year.

Lots of Ohio and Yellow Buckeyes around me. Bees work the Yellow Buckeye heavily. I've not noticed any harm.
If you're concerned about shaking them through the hole in the top of the package, just take a razor knife and cut the screen from one whole side of the package. They'll all come out in one shake.

I just made the short sides (with the frame rabbet) out of wood. Easy, solid connections.
