Re: 5-frame standard corrugated NUC BOXES

It looks like a JESTER'S EZ NUC to me. http://www.dadant.com/catalog/m01502-jester-s-ez-nuc I just bought some, but would have preferred a drive to Clute since I'm there monthly anyway. :(

    Re: Hive Maintenance

Yes, they are suggesting painting with the bees trapped inside. The box cutter is your best bet and it can wait until your next inspection. I prefer to rotate the box out because they seem to need...

    Re: plywood tops and bottoms

Put the rails down which provides a top entrance and a flat top. You can use the same entrance reducers or make full blocking strips, if you want.

    Re: plywood tops and bottoms

I just cut, assembled and primed 12 8-frame migratory tops. I used Zinsser oil based primer; we'll see how it does. Huber also specs Polyurethane glue, so I used original Gorilla. Latex top coats...
  6. Re: Trying to rear a new queen bee in Florida in January

It is possible, especially with the weird weather this year. I had a dink hive with a crippled queen going into winter. I had already written them off, but was hopeful she would keep it going until...

    Re: Help With Spring Management

I suggest you consider shifting your hive equipment around. You could make some hives double deep plus mediums and others all medium for a while. This would help you get some more medium frames...

Re: Sugar Shake/Roll - Why Does It Work?

Baby powder wouldn't dissolve in water allowing the mites to be counted either.

Re: The State of the Union's Honey?

Is it completely banned? I thought you just had to pay a vet fee to write the script.

    Re: Stacked Mating Nucs

I'm planning to use 8 frame mediums boxes for mating. Due to space limitations I'm planning to stack 2 or 3 with entrances pointed different directions. This answers my questions about using...
  11. Re: Feedback on ventilation/superhighway design

First, welcome. You are in for a fun ride!

In my opinion that is wasted effort. The bees will fill in those triangles when they draw comb. They will leave plenty of vent space around the sides...

    Re: 9 mil nitrile gloves

Please let us know the actual thickness. As a heads up, the last HF gloves I got were in a box labeled Large, but I think they are XL.

I wish they wouldn't do that. I'll have to pay sales tax and I still can't drive there quickly. :ws:

    Re: double layer or single?

I think a lot has to do with the purpose and location of the hive. Our visitors are there to see the butterflies and the bees are a nice thing to have. They stay there for no more than a couple...

    Re: double layer or single?

I missed the entire thread. We have an OB hive in our butterfly center. It was originally single layer with 3 deep and a shallow. When I got involved they informed me it was constantly (2-3 times...

    Re: 9 mil nitrile gloves

I use the 5 mil over baseball batting gloves. http://t.harborfreight.com/5-mil-nitrile-powder-free-gloves-100-pc-x-large-61359.html I may try golf gloves as they seem a better.

    These tear, but you...

Re: What is the per hive value?

Thanks!, I figured that, but wanted to verify. I don't know how consistent the retail pricing is. Local honey squeeze bottles were going for $4 in a higher end foodie store in Houston. Non-local...

Was this based on retail pricing in small units or wholesale barrel pricing?

Re: All Mediums: Was Brother Adam wrong?

I'm sure others have done more cutouts, but from what I've seen they use whatever space they have. Under a shed it was about the size of a medium frame about 4' of combs. They had more space above...

  22. Re: Ethical obligation of someone teaching an intro class?

I wasn't assuming that at all. Only stating that many people that would purchase the packages would not be able to pass.

I'm surprised that the package sales go to commercials. I figured they...
  23. Re: Ethical obligation of someone teaching an intro class?

This would kill the package sales. I'm surprised at how many people with years of bee-having consider themselves experts, but wouldn't get a B.

    Re: Reversible tops/bottoms paint

After priming 25 boxes, I'm thinking about thinning it and dipping the entire box. I need to research how much it can be diluted and still be effective. I'm not looking forward to painting or the...
  25. Re: "Sideliner" Equipment in Order of Importance?

It looked like they are buying your honey and wax. You don't get a crop. It looks like a quick way to crush. I'd like to see that unit run on foundationless frames. :D
