Howdy.
I got a call from a lady in South Texas that needs bees removed. She says the bees have lived in her Dad's house for over 30 years!!! He has passed away and they need them...
By removing the excluder you make it more receptive for comb development(IMHO). To my knowledge, bees won't relocate wax like you are talking about. Just remove this wax to prevent additional burr...
It is always a good idea to freeze your combs for 24 hours before packaging. I ask you, what can it hurt to do the freezing first?
I'm not sure about the jacket, but I love their suits!!!!! I have 2 of them. I will no longer do any cut-outs w/o wearing it. In fact, my 2 Dadant jackets are now useless unless I have an observer...
I use only top entrances. I also only use 8-frame mediums for everything. Mr Bush is right. After about 4 brood boxes, I put an entrance on very similar to Desert Viking Ranch's setup. I do however...
They are left over scout bees and others that were in the air. If you don't collect them, then eventually they will return to the hive they swarmed from. A queen excluder is a safe bet to keep the...
It helps to keep a piece of a plastic queen excluder stapled over the entrance holes of a TBH as well as a clipped queen.
Well too bad! I don't do facebook and am not about to create an account to see it!
Yep, that's the most bright yellow comb that I've ever seen. Wonder why it is so?
Yes you can do it that way. Give the branch a bump after you get them sprayed w/sugar water. Two other ways is to vacuum them into a bee box, or this: ...
I would remove them ASAP. They could be false also. They are located right in the middle of some drone cells. Remove them and then keep an eye on the hive, checking them once a week to see if more...
They aren't going to be any problem, but I'd take them away this afternoon or tomorrow. Dump the extra clump of bees onto the top of their hive.
Yes, most likely. But do this. Put some(1 lb or 2) dry granulated sugar on a cardboard square(or similar) for them to eat. Make sure a clean source of water is nearby.
I do a lot like this one! Use a door-knob hole saw/bit for your drill, and go through the soffit to get a confirmed visual of NO bees there. Sound can travel many ways inside walls. Check the soffit...
If you want to do an equal split, divide it all, equally in half; eggs, brood, larva, honey and pollen. Put the queen in the new split. The original hive will grow a new queen if you have left some...
Nice job! I do a ton of cut-outs here in central TX. I never transfer comb due to SHB larva!!! I find the bees can build fresh comb quickly as they do after they have swarmed somewhere. You may...
This is my home-made bee vac. Works great!! https://picasaweb.google.com/110129302850842696588/BeeVac
I agree with the size of the hood. But, I wondered if the circular area of the helmet would inhibit me on extractions should I need to say get my head in somewhere to look.
I'm interested in knowing which veil type you experienced beeks prefer. Do you prefer a ventilated fencing hood veil or a ventilated round hood veil and why? I've been using the ventilated fencing...
The 6 p.m. Channel 2 news had an interesting story about a beehive being stolen from a restaurant in Houston.
You can watch it here:

Consider reversing the brood boxes to put the honey stores on top. You might also put another medium box on top of that for your nectar flow.
Well they swarmed alright. It could be for many reasons, honey-bound brood area, overcrowding, etc. But, I would look for some queen cells. It might even be a few days before a few queen cells become...
CORRECTION: The swarm I thought I lost due to the sudden wet and then cold, made it !!!! I did lose about 1/3 of the bees however. I'll check and see if the queen made it in a few days. Anyway,...
Probably not. Top bar hive combs would collapse whenever you try to go down the road to place them somewhere else for pollination. It is not likely they would make it out of the yard!!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langstroth_hive Scroll down, and find them. It says these are the inside measurements.
