Anyone else have an idea? The inside of the cell looked a little like dry cotton..

Re: Capped Queen Cell Looks Strange Today

Hmm, I've never heard of the bees helping the queen out. Always thought she chewed her way through.

Either she is emerging or she is dead.

Capped Queen Cell Looks Strange Today

Today I briefly checked the nuc that has a capped queen cell in it. The tip of the cell looked removed and I could see some fuzzy white stuff. Are the bees tearing down the queen cell or is something...

    Re: Booming Hives

Been checking in on them about once a week. They've been growing by leaps and bounds. Going to continue that program since you said it was OK! Thanks!

    Booming Hives

How frequently should I check my boomer hives this spring? Trying to toe the line between staying on top of swarms and too many inspections.

    Re: Black Honey Bees ??

Off topic: Doesn't it look like a queen may have emerged from one of those queen cells? There is a cell hinge at the bottom.
  10. Re: Never, Never, Never and Never again wear.....

Last year had a girl see me at the chicken coop from the entrance of her hive (about 15 feet away) and made a beeline to my upper lip. I saw her coming and was able to brush her off before too much...

Re: Open Brood Nest without Drawn Comb

The end frames on either side are honey and pollen stores. Seems like I should leave those so they can feed the babies.

Re: Open Brood Nest without Drawn Comb

In order to add the empty frames, I'll have to remove some. They have brood in 7 frames in the top box. What do I do with the frames I remove? There are TONS and TONS of bees in this hive. When I...

Re: Open Brood Nest without Drawn Comb

Would I only open up the top brood box? What to do with the frames I remove? Put them in a new super or just remove them entirely?

Re: Open Brood Nest without Drawn Comb

    Great!

How open should I make the brood nest? It is currently in two deeps and very full - 6-7 frames of brood in each deep - loads of brood. Plan is to add another deep and bring a few frames...

Re: Open Brood Nest without Drawn Comb

This is the good part of having bees that are booming - running out of hardware! Time to get into the shop and start making some!

Open Brood Nest without Drawn Comb

Is there a way to provide space in the brood nest without using drawn combs? I'm out of drawn combs.

    Re: Simulated Swarm Question

Those are the two choices I am mulling over now. Since flow is coming early this year, I am probably going to recombine so we have a strong colony to gather.

    Re: Simulated Swarm Question

Yes, I was ahead of the swarm. Took the queen to the new location. Spotted her - for sure. She is happy and laying in the new location.

There are no eggs in the old hive now. If they don't have...

    Simulated Swarm Question

Help! I split a hive last weekend. Decided to split after seeing about 10 swarm cells - all empty. Took the queen, some nurse bees, a couple frames of honey/ pollen. Left 5 frames of eggs, larvae,...

There are drones in my apiary. All hives have them. They have been there for over a month. Weird, warm weather!

Re: How early do/can you split?

I'm in SW CO and decided to perform a swarm control split about a week ago. Found about 5 swarm cells with eggs in them in one hive. I was able to split into two deeps and have plenty of brood,...
