    Re: Fondant is a pain

I'm still using the dry sugar on newspaper but would like to try the fondant or brick next year. Is there a possibility of adding too much vinegar and I don't know where to get the vitamin addition....
  5. Re: Queen- after removing supers- think I removed a queen...

Thanks for the commiseration... I feel a bit foolish even to have done this. It isn't as though I started a few years ago.

I guess I'll have to write off one of these hives. I'll check for...
  6. Re: Queen- after removing supers- think I removed a queen...

If I do find emergency queen cell(s)- they don't have time to get her hatched and working. It would identify which one I will lose for the next year.

I had thought that maybe I could see some bees...
  7. Queen- after removing supers- think I removed a queen...

I was wondering if there are any ways to find the correct hive if a queen is found in a super after removing them from several hives.

I found a cluster of bees on two of my empty supers after...

    Re: Propolus 2/3 across entrance

Yes- I can still install the mouse guards. Though I wonder if it's necessary with so much propolis already guarding the entrance.

I am still wondering if the bees can remove that much propolis...

    Re: Propolus 2/3 across entrance

When they built it they were a small swarm. Right now there are a lot of bees on the front entrance probably getting rid of the drones.

Maybe they still need it but are they able to remove such a...

    Propolus 2/3 across entrance

I had a late swarm given to me. I hadn't noticed until a week ago that they had made a barrier of propolus across 2/3's of the entrance with a few holes in it. The other third is open.

    They are...
  12. Re: Have skunks- can't use imidacloprid a neonicotinoid

    Jackam et al,

Thanks for your great advise. I had planned on checking PA laws... though I have done it for groundhogs and other problem critters. I do know how to handle a gun and have a few more...
  13. Re: Have skunks- can't use imidacloprid a neonicotinoid

Thank you for all your replies and the precautions. I do have both a single shot .22 and one with a clip. Good to know about the game laws re: pests. I'll look into getting some florescent paint-...
  14. Re: Have skunks- can't use imidacloprid a neonicotinoid

I don't have an air rifle but do have other types. About 6 years back, and before that, I did have problems with the skunks bothering the hives but not in the last few years.

    These are all good...
  15. Re: Have skunks- can't use imidacloprid a neonicotinoid

    rwlaw,

I didn't know about the ammonia soaked rags. We might try that first.

    Thanks for the idea,

  16. Re: Have skunks- can't use imidacloprid a neonicotinoid

To begin- I do give the lead treatment to groundhogs and some racoons but since skunks are nocturnal and you can't shoot after sundown...!

We are having LOTS of skunk "emissions" at night and it's...
  17. Have skunks- can't use imidacloprid a neonicotinoid

I was looking for something that kills the grubs that skunks eat. Been having some very unpleasant nights.

I found "Imidacloprid" but then found it was a neonicotinoid, which I understand is a...

Re: How much syrup is too much?

I realized I was giving the wrong impression- They started out as nuc's but are in full ten frame hives now. If that makes a difference for your replies.

Re: How much syrup is too much?

Supers still on. On two of them the 2nd hive box was put on recently and there's still a fair amount of space for her to lay. Thought they would put the extra nectar in the supers above. Of course I...

Re: How much syrup is too much?

    Casper,

I didn't used to feed them much before this year. And I've never seen them take so much.

If it's OK to give them that much, I'll invest in more sugar.

    Thanks!

How much syrup is too much?

I started with two nucs that now have two hive boxes and two supers on them. Also a swarm that I just added a second hive box. There doesn't seem to be very much nectar now, so I'm feeding them sugar...
  22. Re: Anyone Near Jay, Maine Who Can Help Me Catch A Swarm?

A couple of times when I had a swarm out of reach I tied a drawn frame to a long pole and propped it into the swarm (or very near it). You could tie the pole to your 16' ladder or whatever is handy....

  25. What techniques for washing pollen out of frames

I am trying to free up some of my frames that have pollen in them. I just tried to spray the pollen out and got only a few cells done. How do I do it so that it's more efficient?

    I have some nucs...
