  1. Re: Trying to tell if there are drones for split

Thank you. I didn't see any purple eyes, so I guess I'll wait a week or two before checking again.
  2. Trying to tell if there are drones for split

My first hive has come through "winter"(whatever that is lol) very strong and I'm trying to figure out when I can make a split. It consists of 2 very full deep boxes, and there is a lot - probably a...

Re: Bees mostly gone, funny looking honey

Does anyone have any insight about why the bee's larvae are dried out & dead? Are there just too few bees left to care for them or should I be concerned about disease?

Re: Bees mostly gone, funny looking honey

What do I have to do with them now? I have tried to find out online, but other than freezing the frames, I can't find out anything else. If I freeze the frames, what do I do with them afterwards? ...

Bees mostly gone, funny looking honey

I inspected my hives 2 1/2 weeks ago and found that one of them had 3 made supercedure cells. This is a pretty new hive (2 months since installing from package), but I had to requeen after 1 month. ...

Re: Queen cell on drone comb?

Very, very little capped brood, about one half of a frame all together (1 side only). But they only have 5 frames drawn out. The other has the same amount of drawn comb, but it's 1/3 - 1/2 brood.

    Queen cell on drone comb?

Today when inspecting my hives I discovered that one of them has no eggs/larvae, couldn't find queen, and then I found 3 supercedure cells on a green Pierco drone frame. Is there any way they would...

    re-queening; squashed queen

Okay, so since I started so late in the season (May 17th) I could only find one supplier with package bees left, but they were not as suited for my area (and being in a sub-division), so I was...

Amt. of time to draw comb?

How long does it typically take for comb to be drawn on most/all of first 10 frames in a hive that was from a package? The first week they drew out 3-4 frames each, but when I inspected my hives...

Sorry if I sounded that way, I was not offended, just clarifying. And trying not to freak when I squish one. ;)

I didn't say they are just bugs, I just referred to not understanding why someone else said it. And my point was that I now see what they probably meant - just not to spend all our time...

    I finally get it!

Okay, let me start with saying I'm posting this for the benefit of other new Beekeepers who feel like I have for the last month (I'm guessing that's a lot). I've spent a lot of my first month of...

Plasticell foundation in a wood frame. The other hive has drawn out comb as expected, and while I do have one of those green plastic drone comb frames, they mostly made warped looking comb on it...

    Bees drawing comb crazily

One of my 2 new hives is drawing out the comb very strangely. The frames were pushed all the way against each other. As you can see on the drone frame they are making little islands of two-sided...

    Re: Talking to bees?

That's great! Some of my neighbors and a couple of in-laws think I've gone off the deep end just in getting bees anyway, and that's without hearing me talk to them. Of course, my family already...

I haven't had my bees for very long , but I have already caught myself talking to them when I'm doing anything with the hives. So I was just wondering if I'm the only crazy person here that talks to...

I did peek into the hives yesterday and sure enough, 3/4 of the bees had drifted to the other hive. I switched the hives' locations and now I'm just leaving them alone until time for my first...

Thank you to all who responded! I won't worry about the part shade. As for the SHB, I've browsed this forum for info, and I think for now I will try CD jewel cases under the inner covers.
