  1. Re: Completed our first harvest this past weekend

Do you have a pic of your homemade extractor? I am looking to build one myself.
  2. Re: Honey comb suspended from bottom of hive with pic...

Well, this is what I did:

I took the brood box and put in on a sheet of plywood. I then removed the comb from the bottom screen and put into frames using rubber bands like the pic above, just...
  3. Honey comb suspended from bottom of hive with pic...

Ok, so I have this one problem bee hive... I got them as a nuc in the Spring. They did extremely well, then swarmed. They did not successfully re-queen. So, long story short, I combined them with...
  4. Re: Swarm/Re-queen delimma I could really use some advice on....

Oh, there is no doubt that this has been a challenge and certainly a learning experience.

I am thinking about combining the original hive and the nuc I have with the new queen. I don't think the...
  5. Re: Swarm/Re-queen delimma I could really use some advice on....

Well, I took the gamble and used my new queen to start a nuc.

Now today when I opened up the old hive, I found two frames with SMB infestation. I guess the hive wasn't strong enough to defend...
  6. Re: Swarm/Re-queen delimma I could really use some advice on....

So, do you think I should star a nuc with the queen that I just picked up or with the queen cell in the existing hive?
  7. Re: Swarm/Re-queen delimma I could really use some advice on....

I didn't even think about starting a nuc with the queen cell. I like that idea. Thanks!

(Got my new queen via UPS today. Dead. Bee Weaver is going to replace it, though. But I am going to...
  8. Re: Swarm/Re-queen delimma I could really use some advice on....

UPDATE: So, I inspected the hive and found one queen cell with a large larvae in it, and it was being closed up by the workers.

I have a queen that is supposed to get here today. So, do I start...
  9. Re: Swarm/Re-queen delimma I could really use some advice on....

Hmmm... So, what would your advice be for me to do with my new queen that I am expecting this week?
  10. Re: Swarm/Re-queen delimma I could really use some advice on....

    Am I? I really don't know.

    Re: Pants

I wear old faded jeans and a long sleeve lightweight cotton shirt. And a veil. But I very seldom wear gloves and pretty much never wear my bee suit anymore.

Re: New to the forum, new to bee keeping

As far as I know, Wabash is the only place in Houston to buy beekeeping equipment. I think there is a place up near Conroe that sells it, too, but I am not sure.

And thanks to all for the warm...
  13. Re: Swarm/Re-queen delimma I could really use some advice on....

I am hoping that sun will come out later this afternoon so I can check on them. Keeping my fingers crossed.
  14. Re: Swarm/Re-queen delimma I could really use some advice on....

Oh! I forgot to mention that, too. On Monday, I did just that. I put a frame with eggs and larvae from my other hive into this hive. I don't know the results yet, though.

    Would they transport...
  15. Re: Swarm/Re-queen delimma I could really use some advice on....

I normally inspect once a week, or every other week. I have tried to stay out of the swarmed hive, though. Right after the swarm, I checked on the hive and found 4 queen chambers that were closed...
  16. Re: Swarm/Re-queen delimma I could really use some advice on....

I am not sure when my new queen will get to me. It could be as early as next Tuesday or as late as next Friday. Maybe I should wait until she gets in to make this call then?

    Oh, and does my...
  17. Swarm/Re-queen delimma I could really use some advice on....

So, here is my bee keeping story as briefly as possible:

I bought two nucs this spring and installed them in two hives in my backyard. Hive A took off, with new eggs/brood. Hive B, after two...

New to the forum, new to bee keeping

Hello, everyone. I just started bee keeping this spring. I live in the suburbs of Houston and I have two hives.

I am not certain but I think that I have made almost every mistake possible as a...
