i kept mine open all year, except for about a month in late january/early february. didn't have any trouble. the hives that over-winter were out of the direct winter wind though.

suprisingly the wax was still soft and pliable. i think it was stored in a basement for quite some time by the looks of the card board packaging.

i have noticed from time to time some odd cells on the frames. i had a guy tell me they were just "cup" cells and that bees just make them for some reason.
