  1. Re: Laying Worker Shake-out, will the laying worker enter a functioning hive?

Great posts, I'm thinking now. Why bother shaking out! Its just one box of bees, mostly drones now, just let them die out over winter. Sounds draconian but even if there is a tiny chance that...
  2. Laying Worker Shake-out, will the laying worker enter a functioning hive?

I'm going to follow Michael Bush's shakeout method for a hive of mine that never got started and refused to accept a new queen. (4x)

My question is, by shaking frames in front of a good strong...

Re: Queen flew away while introducing!

All, so I've tried to introduce two more queens into this hive.

Pretty sure I have laying workers and no queen.

I read that with laying workers the hive is basically finished and all you can do...

Re: Introducing queen to queenless hive

I have no reco other than sharing my experience this year trying to do the same. (introduce a queen into a queen-less hive)

    Three attempts, all have failed.

First two attempts where with push...
  5. Placing Honey Super with partially filled frames from last year... OK?

Whats everyone think. I'm about to put a honey super on my hive. I have 4,5 frames from last year that I was not comfortable extracting as they either had non capped cells or where just not...
  6. Re: Deep nucs into mediums, please vet my plan...

Tx, all. Yes shaking is def. preferred to brushing so that is what I'd do for sure.

I'm also liking the idea of putting the deep frame box as my bottom box, letting it ride out the summer, then...
  7. Deep nucs into mediums, please vet my plan...

Hoping those with experience can comment on my plan to get rid of the 5 deep nuc frames that I now have in my medium boxes.

Here is what I think I want to do.

Assume I'm working with 3 medium...

Re: Queen flew away while introducing!

Tx, all. Good responses. Of course I had closed up the hive soon after she flew away. like most things, 'now I know' the Michael Bush hints. Makes total sense.

I'm cracking the hive today to...

Re: Queen flew away while introducing!

Tx all, makes me question the use of a push in cage vs. a standard queen 'match box'

Oh well, time will tell. This poor hive can't catch a break.

    Queen flew away while introducing!

    Dammit!

While lifting off the 'push in' cage from a frame the queen would not go onto the frame so I turned the cage over and just like that she flew away!

Stunned I just sat there. Now what. ...
  11. Re: Are there clear indicators of when to release new queen from push in cage?

Yup, thats right. I placed a push in cage with new Russian queen on a frame Tuesday morning.
  12. Are there clear indicators of when to release new queen from push in cage?

Installed Tuesday morning, now Thursday. So two full days so far. Have not inspected yet.

I don't want to rush things but I also don't know how to tell when I do inspect what the indicators are...
  13. Re: Just Re-queened: Do worker girls feed queen through push in queen cage?

Perfect, I put the frame right up next to the other frame. Hoping the old is not around. Curious if they can kill the new queen while she is inside the cage. Maybe sting her while she is in there.
  14. Just Re-queened: Do worker girls feed queen through push in queen cage?

Just re-queened and put a wire push in queen cage into a frame of built up wax. Many posts that say to put the queen cage on top of cells of brood. unfortunately I have no brood!

    My new queen...
  15. Re: New Russian Package - Listless, W/Supercedure Cells, odd behavior

Update: I just had to go inspect again.

    - I know see curly larva in cells, not a lot but some! So, I have that going for me.
    - Total of 8 superS cells. I tried to take pics but the bees just...
  16. Re: New Russian Package - Listless, W/Supercedure Cells, odd behavior

Pretty sure I never said they "will" do anything Honey-4-All. I did say I had read a few things though...
  17. Re: New Russian Package - Listless, W/Supercedure Cells, odd behavior

    Honey-4-All, can you elaborate?
  18. Re: New Russian Package - Listless, W/Supercedure Cells, odd behavior

As chaotic as this all is, I love it. So interesting.
  19. Re: New Russian Package - Listless, W/Supercedure Cells, odd behavior

Another thought, does the existing queen lay in supercedure cells or does a worker? If the existing queen is duped into replacing herself, I'd have a new Russian queen, no?
  20. Re: New Russian Package - Listless, W/Supercedure Cells, odd behavior

I bought Russians for one reason. I had read that they are more tolerant to disease. After my Carnolian hive last year blew up with DWV and a host of other ailments, I wanted to try something.

  21. Re: New Russian Package - Listless, W/Supercedure Cells, odd behavior

Ok, yeah. forgot to add that I don't see any eggs or larva. I'm terrible at spotting eggs though.
  22. New Russian Package - Listless, W/Supercedure Cells, odd behavior

Hi there, into my 3rd week with a new package here in coastal CT.

    About the hive:
    - Russian 3lb package, some drone came along. They are hanging out for the most part on the provided Honey...

OAV With Hive Top Feeder on?

I've read through the sticky post on OAV in detail and have chosen to treat my new package now that they have two weeks in the hive. One week with the queen released.

I have a hive top feeder on. ...
  24. How long for queen to be freed from her cage?

Installed my package this past Sat. night. Dug out the cork, pushed part of a mini-marshmallow in just like I've done in the past.

    However.

This time the queen cage had lots of white 'jelly'...
