    Re: things looking bad

OK so now I'm feeling a little better. What a great resource it is to have knowledgeable people such as yourselves.

I do see them flying in and out on warm days like today. And they seem to have...

    Re: things looking bad

Oh wow, thank you for the quick response. That makes me feel better. Luckily, we don't have too long or too cold of a winter here.

Maybe she just quit for the winter or realized they couldn't...

    things looking bad

Well, I don't think my hive is going to make it. Going into the first winter and here's the situation:

Probably two months ago I noticed that there seemed to be fewer bees in the hive. I still...

    Built Up

Here's a picture of my hive - had the bees about 60 days now. Comb on 22 bars; probably 18 are full comb. They've got probably 6 or so that are mostly honey at this point - so 12 that are brood.

Nope, hand weeding - I figure maybe I grabbed the clover she was on... or maybe she was just having a bad day.

    stung

Just got stung on the arm while weeding the garden probably 25 feet from the front of the hive.
Other factors: I was weeding a clover patch in their flight path from the hive, it was just starting...

    Thanks for the help AugustC,

OK, great info - thanks all. I figured I was over-questioning.

Estraya, yep, built it with my dad. It's based on the biobees plans.

    Eh?

OK, so first time beekeeper. Filled my TBH with a package in early April.

Like many people, the first experience with bearding is a little strange!

Days are getting hot here in central NC -...

Re: Add entrance holes after installation?

Shannonswyatt - I wondered about entrance size in feral colonies. Good to know that they aren't too picky. I think that since there's still so much I don't know, I'll stick with what they have. It...

Re: Add entrance holes after installation?

Thanks Duncan, very good to know that if it comes to it, they may not care about the drill. Also - good call on moving the bars back, seems obvious now that you said it!

I just went out and looked...

    Add entrance holes after installation?

    Hi all,

I've had my first bees for about a month now and everything seems to be going great. They're building lots of comb and filling it with nectar, bread and babies. Brood has started hatching...

    Re: Bees ignoring comb?

OK, I went back in and removed a couple of the empty bars. I had 5 empty bars placed between drawn comb, and they'd already started drawing new comb on three of those, so I left them where they were....

    Re: Bees ignoring comb?

very interesting - thanks for the tips. i figure that once they've got the brood nest filled back in they'll head back to that comb again. That's only 2 or three bars that need filling in.

    Re: Bees ignoring comb?

Thanks drlonzo - that sounds like what I did.

I also noticed that they started making a small extra comb between the first bar and the front wall of the hive. I don't guess there's anything I can...

    Re: Bees ignoring comb?

Very good - that's kind of what I figured. They definitely have a bunch of bees working on the new bars in the "main" part of the hive that has capped brood. So I guess they're wanting to keep...

    Bees ignoring comb?

Hi all. New beekeeper with yet another question!

I started my TBH earlier this month and gave them 10 bars before the follower board.
They built comb on 8 of these, so I figured it was time to...

    Thanks!
So if I can trust what I see, I think most of what's capped is the same and must all be brood. Guess the girls will have some help soon!

New beekeeper, and trying to learn to identify things. Can y'all take a look at the attached photo and tell me what the capped cells are? I see uncapped babies at the top. Most capped cells I see are...

    Re: First Inspection

Very good tip - kind of push them back down into the hive as you put the bar in.
