Re: 9 Frames in 10 Frame Super

This is only my second year with beehives. I don't remember where I heard about this hive configuration but it is working very well in my yard.
I have ten frame medium boxes using only eight frames...

Re: Flea Control in Bee Yard.

I looked at the active ingredients of the treatments you listed and they all contain neonicotinoids. If my cat gets close to my hives or under them wouldn't that be bad for the bees? I have no idea...

    Flea Control in Bee Yard.

My cat shares the backyard with the bees and they don't seem to mind her being there. In fact a lot of times she sleeps right under the hives.
My backyard is mostly eucalyptus mulch/chips.

    The...

    Thanks everyone for your input.

Yes, I saw her a few days after the drifting took place. I also saw her on the 21st and again today. She is a beautiful queen with an amazing brood pattern. I...

On April 19th 2014 I installed a package of Italians, they were very gentle for a couple weeks. On May 8th I put a pollen trap on a nearby hive that caused A LOT of drifting into the new Italian...

Re: Wire crimper with helical gears

I just received my new wire crimpers from Dadant. They have identical LH skew gears that don't mesh. Completely unusable design.
Looks like the crimpers from Brushy Mountain has straight teeth.

Pesticide and other bad stuff in pollen

I have been collecting pollen for a couple weeks now. My plan was to feed it back to the bees early next spring and use some in pollen frames for queen rearing attempts.

I did not think I would...

  11. Re: Nice Italian neighbors taking in confused bees!

This is a Sundance II top mount. Its suppose to only collect about 70% of the pollen.
Before I put the trap on I made sure there was a lot of stored pollen.
Today when I was in the hive I saw a lot...
  12. Re: Nice Italian neighbors taking in confused bees!

    Please, I have a follow-up question.

It's been one week since I put the pollen trap on. I think the Borg, I mean Italians are done assimilating their neighbors. Resistance was futile! I added one...
  13. Re: Nice Italian neighbors taking in confused bees!

I sure hope they get this trap figured out soon. Today was very warm and there were bees all over the place! They were flying in every direction and making a lot of noise. If this was a regular...
  14. Nice Italian neighbors taking in confused bees!

I installed a package of Italians on April 19th. They are doing really well. About 4 deep frames of brood in various stages and bringing in enough nectar to have some capped honey already and lots of...

Re: Optimal size for a beehive?

He still does not want to make a split! He does not believe they will make a new queen.

So, the optimal size is what ever the beekeeper wants it to be.

All of the bees are using the top entrance now and the bottom entrance is closed.

    Thank you!
  23. Re: Top mount Sundance II Pollen Trap Question

    Thank you for that Lloyd!
