Got a drone layer (my first) in one of my packages this year. This worked great...slow building hive but they are doing well now.

Re: Do gaps in boxes matter?

SB, I've experienced it myself with a couple of deeps that I've assembled. I've noticed warping about what you're describing in gap. One thing to keep in mind is that hives get very heavy when bees...

    Re: Hello from Ontario, Canada

Welcome from NE Kansas Michelle. I still have some drones in my hives, so I think queens can still be made here, but it's late for sure. Hopefully somebody more in your locale will chime in with some...
  8. Re: What are your goals as a first year beekeeper ???

Just second year here and still know about enough to be dangerous, so I'd like to chime in.

My goal last year was to get one or more of my three hive start through the winter. I was so convinced...

    Re: packing in the pollen

I've sure got the opposite problem here. I'm watching one hive closely, as they seem to be wanting to fill the brood nest with nectar. I'd hate to lose a late swarm to that.

    Some local beeks in...

    Re: packing in the pollen

Yep, lots of pollen coming in here too. I've still got a lot of drones too. We've just had such a lush, wet year here. Sunflower and other things are going well. The bees are really busy.

Ditto the above, I'd sure get some feed on them, and put a tiny portion of pollen patty on them, per Gary's advice above. Good luck to you.
