Re: First Time Is A Failure

Did you have the medium filled with frames or just partial with 4? Hopefully it was full so they didn't slide around too much. Good luck next time.
  4. Re: Catch Swarm in Nuc or 8 Frame Medium, which is best and why?

I like the 5 frame nucs for most of the swarms. Easier to carry, load, move around etc... Then get to feeding and let them build up for a month or so. If you don't mind the lifting and carrying the...

Re: My (alternative) theory of the Bush Miracle

Bwrangler, I don't see how many colonies made up each of the test groups? Only the one in the backyard I see mentioned. I'm guessing the queens were taken from already existing stock, but earlier...

    Re: dead hive.. your thoughts?

Possibly the bees you were seeing were robbers and the remnants of wax bits on tops of the frames. Maybe post a picture if possible. How long since you looked in the top of the hive?
  7. Re: Caught and installed swarm from my hive. Now what?

Can't quite tell, but did you dump the swarm back into the hive they came from, or into a new hive?? If you just put them back into the original hive, be ready to go get them again.....

    Looks...

    Re: Genetics and feed.

A couple additional thoughts.. There are 40,000 "dogs" or so ganging up to go through winter together, vs. one having to generate enough heat to survive. My 40,000 "dogs" also are living right on...

    Re: Installed two packages today

Colby, I'd put the slides in the screened bottom boards while their getting settled. They don't really like alll that light coming in and they could abscond. Wait a couple weeks before you take the...

    Re: Olivarez bees

As I replied in another post, make sure you're on top of your mites.. Carnie's or the Hyg.. They will make a lot of honey and will overwinter well with treatments, fwiw!

    Re: Carniolan Queens

"Brandy, are the mites bad in Colorado, or are the bees just being shipped with them?"

I don't think it's any worse here in CO as anywhere else. Big hives with big populations that don't have...

    Re: Carniolan Queens

Just a heads up with the 4,000 packages from Olivarez. They'll make a boat load of honey and a boat load of mites. Make sure you treat them...fwiw Easily 1,000 mites dropped off in the fall!!

    Re: Mini frame assembly

What kind of mini nucs? If they're wood nuc's with just a top bar frame they will attach the comb to the wall and you'll have a little trouble removing the frame. If they're the styrofoam mini's,...

That's what I do, ear tags, color for queen batch, number for year. 31, 32, last year. This year 41, 42, etc... But I'm up for any improvements.

Re: Move bees outside in warm weather?
