    Re: Top Bar Question

It would probably be fine unless it was a very large swarm. I might go with a 1/2 of the the top bar if it was a large swarm. Try to make sure there's plenty of room for the bees. And a swarm will...

    Re: cut out question

I did my first cutout today. Had no luck finding the queen so I just made sure to find eggs to put in the frames.

    Re: feeders?

Yes to the mason jar with suger syrup. Or you can use a ziplock bag. The dry suger is for emergency feeding in late winter.

Re: Question about Very HOT weather, like 105

Sounds like your good on ventilation. Only advice I have is afternoon shade and don't go in the hive unless absolutely necessary when its that hot. You have all new comb and its very easy to tear and...

Re: Crush and strain not good

I've read it takes 8lbs of nectar for 1 lb of wax. But I have top bar hives so this is the method I use. I'm setting up a few Langstroth hives this year and probably at first will crush and strain as...

Re: what to set up for wheelchair bound beekeeper

28" to 34" is typical wheelchair access height. While I'm not in a wheelchair I would think the top of your hive would have to be around this height. A horizontal hive with the langstroth frames...
  7. Re: best way to shake bees on a new tob bar comb.

Bought mine off of ebay cheaper than one from dollar store, only place I found a longer one too. And I agree with you robherc something like one of those throw away razor knives would work better...
  8. Re: best way to shake bees on a new tob bar comb.

I would brush them off since your having to cut the comb to fit. I use a 10 inch bread knife for most all cutting in my top bar hives. Real good for cutting brace comb.
  9. Re: best way to shake bees on a new tob bar comb.

Any foragers and guard bees that may be on the comb should. Nurse bees with stay with the brood.
  10. Re: best way to shake bees on a new tob bar comb.

Bee brush if you have one. Maybe use a turkey wing feather if you can get one. The new comb on a top bar frame is too fragile for much bumping with no support on the sides
. You could just put bee's...

Re: How to feed a Top Bar Hive

I use quail/chick waterer with small pebbles in the trough to prevent drowning. The kind that screw onto quart jars.

Re: Top bar hive entrance front or side?

Mine are on the side. One hive entrance is centered, I dont like this one for the reason Michael states above. The other one is toward the end of the hive still on the side. The bees keep the...

Re: Galvanized or Stainless or other?

Either should work just fine, galvanized being cheaper than stainless. I've used deck screws for mine as well. They are coated with something but not galvanized.
  16. Re: help! new package making comb on 1 1/2 top bars instead of 1 1/4

I agree with rob I would just move the suger syrup to the other side and let them build where they want to. You can manipulate the hive once they are more established.

Re: Granulated Sugar in TBH Package Install

Yes a chicken waterer. About 3$ at the feed store. It fits well in my top bar hive...I drilled a 3/4 hole in my follower board so i can plug it with a cork if i want. I would give them about half of...

Re: Granulated Sugar in TBH Package Install

Feed mine suger water with a quart jar chick waterer behind the follower board. Put marbles or rocks in the trough to help stop drowning bees.

I bought all of mine from them in the budget grade. No major issues save one box which had a knot on the corner. Simply should have drilled and screwed that one I think. Otherwise no problems...

Re: I need some help concerning topbars.

You would have to leave bee space somewhere for the bees to go up through the boxes in a converted lang. In a kenyan style top bar the bars are usually tight side by side.

Re: I need some help concerning topbars.

All of my top bars are 1 1/2 and I dont have any problems so far. The bees make brood on the ones they want and store honey where they want anyway. Just rip 2X4's to make them.
