Re: how do you make your inner covers?

This is what I do also. Can cut a couple of holes and cover with screen for jar feeders. A slit down the middle on one side only allows it to fold in half for when I'm using them on double nucs. Just...

    Re: A question about splits

With a slightly different twist, would it be hip to pull the queen and a couple frames to a nuc and use that to supply brood to the queenless hive for the next couple weeks before letting them make a...

Re: Opening the Top of the brood nest

Thanks for the clarification. Was concerned about not having the pollen/bee bread right next to the brood, but I guess that's the whole point! Already have some drawn frames to checkerboard in to...

Opening the Top of the brood nest

I'm running all 8-frame mediums. There seems to be brood on all but the outermost frames in the bottom box. One frame in the second box has a very small patch of open brood. The rest where stores...

    Re: Beginner's mistakes

In addition to the camera, or if you don't have one convenient, put a voice recording app on your phone and talk your way through the inspection. Talk about everything you see/notice. Old school...
  8. Re: Feasable to mark existing queen for identification?

In addition to, or in lieu of marking, how many people clip the wings? Doesn't seem as common practice anymore.

    Re: Late Season Try

Interesting experiment Pat. I'm still seeing a few drones over on this side of the Sabine. Couple of years ago, I had a hive swarm toward the end of September. They made a new queen but never really...

Poll: Re: re-discovered SIMPLE 2 queen method

I had a weak nuc that dwindled down to just two medium frames after a split. I took the telescoping cover off one of my strong hives, leaving the inner cover in place with a honey super below. Put...

    Re: Mad (wo)Men

Why were you looking for queen cells? If you suspect no queen, then that would explain the hostility. I did splits last week and they were none too happy about me moving their queen to a nuc.

Re: Trying OTS..Notched my First Frames

Yes indeed, newer comb is much softer. Simply placed the tip of the tool right below the desired cells and rake downward gently.

Can you use a grafting calendar to time cutting out the cells, substituting the graft date with notch date?

Re: To deep? Two deep? Or Too deep?

Lots of variables here. there are ways to deal with all of them, depending on your goals (honey production, queen rearing, etc). In the end, do whatever you wish.
Going into my third year and only a...

Re: Mean bees or just normal

Two weeks ago, my bees wanted my head on a platter. Today I dug through and marked the queen with just a few headbutts.

    Re: Timing the split

What about leaving the old queen, take a couple frames of eggs/open brood and pollen/honey and put that in a nuc? Shake in some extra nurse bees too. Or if you raise your own queens, give the nuc a...
  22. Re: Is it considered standard practice to split a hive each year?

I've read another method that I believe Lauri mentioned, and would like input\thoughts.
This method sort of combines splits and queen rearing, so may not work for someone just starting out with one...
