Re: 2 meter boxes: Never done one before

You and I are doing the same thing, several states apart.

Here is the vac that I built (the third one), and it has been the most efficient and bee friendly one by far. It's also the lightest.

Re: Doing a cutout this weekend

If the barn is getting torn down anyway, open the walls up with a chainsaw and get it done. Sounds like fun to me.
  3. Re: What plant/s are flowing nectar right now near Parsons, WV?

I have a mix of mature hardwood forest, a field full of clover, and lots of overgrown areas of brush and milkweed. I just don't see many bees on anything, for them to be this active. There is sumac...
  4. What plant/s are flowing nectar right now near Parsons, WV?

I have done much research and tried to see what the bees are foraging on right now, but can't seem to find what they are collecting nectar from. Yesterday, there were more bees in the air than I have...

Re: Did you stick with top bar?

[QUOTE=David LaFerney;1140598]I didn't because anything that is different is a pain in the backside. I've gotten rid of or modified everything - boxes, frames, covers, feeders, bottom boards,...

Re: Did you stick with top bar?

I am done with TB. Can't sell TB nucs in my neck of the woods.

    Re: Cut out Question

You can cut out a piece of plywood that is 16.25" x 20", with a hole in the center the size of the top of the bucket. That will let you get the lid off and flip the bucket over, so they have to go...

    Re: A cut out question

Just put them in your deep, and try to save as much brood and empty combs as possible. Leave the honey out of the new setup. If there are not enough combs to fill your box, give them drawn comb if...

    Re: Checking hives without gloves?

I am up to 14 hives now, and there is no way half of them could be worked without gloves. They start stinging before the inner cover is even taken off. The photos online of little kids holding up...

Re: Three queens in a cutout

I placed each queen in a nuc with about a third of the vacced up bees per box. Two of them were in queen clips, and the other was released. The one I released seemed to be the one the workers...

    Three queens in a cutout

I just did my 19th or 20th cutout, and found 3 queens.

I captured a swarm very close to where this cutout hive is, about a week and a half ago. I assume the swarm came from this hive, but the...

Re: What time of day to start a cut-out?

I start all cutouts at the same time.... as soon as I can sneak away from work. If possible just leave the hive box there a few days, and pick them all up at after dark. If it's not close by, I leave...

    Trapout Success!

After making 6 extra trips, at least, the bees are finally sealed off and can't get back into the hive. The entrance of the trapout box is right in from of the screen cone.

    The other photos is...

Re: To those who claim they never ever get stung

I would like to see JPthebeeman work two of my hives and see if the bees have the same reaction to him as they do to me. If you feel like 'bees just don't sting' you, do a cutout.

Re: Cone trap out bees getting back in

It has taken me about 6 trips back on both trapouts I have done to get them really sealed off. They are relentless. If possible, use white painter's caulking. Then, you can see where they are going...

    Re: Best bee vac design?

I agree. There is no way I'd do a cutout like this, just for the bees. Also, I am a veteran carpenter and have done years of handy man work, on houses of mine and my parents. Ladder jacks,...

    Re: Best bee vac design?

Yeah. It's no fun. I am leaving work early today to do one 20' up. I have access to scaffolding, but most of my removals have been on hilly enough terrain to make setting it up more hassle than it is...

    Re: Best bee vac design?

Anything over 10' up makes the extra hoses and cords a pain. I did a few that were 25' or higher last season.

Also, I like to keep the vac very close to the hive itself, to keep the hose length...

    Re: Best bee vac design?

Here is the best setup I have been able to come up with. All of the ones that pull the bees into hive bodies are heavy for high cutout work. The first one I made worked well, but the vac was hooked...

    Using cutout comb

    All,

Friday, I went to a cutout call that turned out to be a deadout that didn't make it through the winter. Is it worth cutting and banding this empty comb into frames for later use? Is it an...
