Re: Why aren't Cloake Boards more popular?

They probably are for those who do this on a bigger scale, most here seem to be on a smaller scale. I used one last season and liked the results. I know that Sue Cobey is a big advocate of cloake...

    Re: Extraction Methods: Simple Draining

No, total rubbish. If the honey pores out, then its not honey but nectar. I tried this long ago, even put the frame in a warming oven overnight - got a few drops of honey in 24 hrs.

Re: For those who use the Testors paint pen..

I've been using these for 3-4 years no problems. Mark stays really well, unlike some of the water-based paints.

    Re: Queen Caging Tips

    Waiting for the video :)

By the wings and straight into the cage (assuming she's already marked). I don't recommend brushing, nor do I usually move much from the hive. Be definitive, tentative...
  8. Re: I got 40 out of 45 Q cells capped and zero hatched???

True, but we're not sure where the problem(s) occurred. I think the grafting piece the easiest, but I appreciate that some do struggle with it. Its getting the cell builder/finisher to function...
  9. Re: I got 40 out of 45 Q cells capped and zero hatched???

    Adam,

Yes, I agree with you, but without knowing a step-by-step procedure of what was done we're left to make a guess. I also agree that when given the opportunity that bees almost always do the...
  10. Re: I got 40 out of 45 Q cells capped and zero hatched???

Using as a starter/finisher, I think you pushed it too hard. Do you really need 45 cells at one time? Start smaller, like 15 cells. If you have an incubator you can really increase your throughput by...
  11. Re: I got 40 out of 45 Q cells capped and zero hatched???

Perhaps you should give us a complete description of your methods.
  12. Re: I got 40 out of 45 Q cells capped and zero hatched???

Going from distant memory, but didn't the same thing happen to you last year?

    Re: Very Bad First Experience

This term may take on more meaning for you as your experience builds. I get the sense right now you're thinking in terms of feet or a couple of meters, later that scale will dramatically increase. In...

    Re: Very Bad First Experience

Not bad advice once the queen settles in. Don't rush the first inspection on the colony that you had queen trouble. Outside of that, I tend to agree with Grozzie that newbees learn when working bees....

  17. Re: Bee photo wanted for business card, earn a hundred bucks

Thought you already picked a winner? My wife was bummed that you picked so quickly, particularly since you said in the opening post that you were going to let this run for a while. Nevertheless, you...

    Re: Very Bad First Experience

Sounds like you may have some robbing going on. Do you have entrance reducers in place? If not, then I suggest you put them on ASAP.

    Re: Sucsessful Queen Introduction tips.

    Harry,

Your equipment looks like it came out of a laboratory not a bee yard. I've seen your other pics over the years and its remarkable how nice you keep your equipment!

    Regarding the laying...

    Re: Flow of the decade

Yeah, I guess the concern is that this spike in flow with be short-lived and then we'll have a longer than usual dearth. Still hoping for the best. Thundershowers till Wednesday should be a bit...

    Flow of the decade

Not sure I've ever seen a flow as good as what's going on over the past week. Everything came on at nearly the same time (tulip poplar, holly, and blackberries). I got a decent swarm last Saturday...
