Poll: Re: Do you Build or Buy your Hive Bodies?

I'm surprised how many are building from scratch. I buy mine $10-$12 per medium & assemble.

    Re: telescoping vs migratory

Migratory covers warp, let water in through the seams. But they are cheep, easy to make, & allow the hives to be stacked on a truck toughing each other.
I use telescoping bit only have 30 or so.
  3. Re: Best way to mix drawn and un-drawn foundation in honey supers?

All the drawn frames in the middle, & the foundation on the outside. Thats how the bees usually do it anyway.

    Re: Hive Scale

That is a really high price. You can buy a digital veterinary scale to set you're hive on for less money.

Re: Mann Lake Ultra Bee Patties

Days start getting longer in a couple weeks, queens will start to lay a little more. If you're goal is to have a large hive unnaturally early in the season you can start now. That's how the guys...
  6. Poll: Re: Treat for Varroa mites or let them suffer & die..........

Yes, IMO the way you worded it probably kept many treatment free beekeepers from responding to you're poll. It became very biased towards the treatment crowd.
If you wanted to know how many treat/...

    Re: Beginners Beekeeping Textbook

My two favorite beginner books are beekeeping for dummies, & the complete idiots guide to beekeeping.
I think you're second book should be the practical beekeeper from Michael Bush

  9. Re: I lost my hive I think to Colony Collapse Disorder I need some experienced beekee

If CCD the queen would still be in the hive, all the honey would remain & robbers won't take it for months.

    Re: Christmas lights for hives?

I know a beekeeper who puts xmas lights on his week nucs in the winter. He does it to keep them warmer on cold nights.

Senco is top of the line, all the carpenters at work use them.

    Re: Need some measurements

If you have any older boxes, just cut them down on a table saw to make shims.
Mine are only about 1" tall.

Re: Who makes the best vented bee jacket

I also use the ultra breeze, heavy duty, american made.
My bees aren't as defensive as the ones you have.
  16. Re: Do you let bees draw out the frames or do you use wax foundation?

I started using some foundationless medium frames with Popsicle stick guides, no wire.
They extracted perfectly, no blow outs. 20 Frame Maxant, & 9 frame Maxant radials.

Re: Is EFB a problem in your Apiary?

Might want to buy queens from a different source. I've heard re-queening with different genetics will clean it up.

Re: Do you use terramycin on your bees?

I'd rather burn my hives than use TM, & that's what I'd do if AFB was present.
Its illegal to use it in many countries
Many of the experts recommend re-queening for EFB these days.

If you have 30,000 bees in the hive & 300 mites after a drench, that's only about 1%.
    Sounds good to me.

Re: Ulster Hive - Mann Lake or Brushy Mountain?

The BM one has a couple features that aren't included with the ManLake one.

    Re: Small Cell Benefits

I've been using small cell with IPM for the last 6 years. Our winter losses run from 10-20%

I can't say the small cell is the reason for our success, but I'm not changing...
