Try what MP suggests and dedicate the overwintered nucs you make in summer as your queen rearing resource. You can put them in to winter 1 or 2 boxes high and they will easily grow and fill 3 or 4...
Yup- Lots of CA queens being bought this Spring for the East Coast. We had the same situation- almost half of our order had dead queens or were laying workers within a few weeks. My best guess is...
You seem to be missing my point(s). Best of luck to you.
Some girls make overwintered nucs too. Ask Rosie. : -)
My math is so off? Is that why our, and other clubs in our region have reduced our dependence on package bees by at least 50%.
One nuc at a...
I don't think so. Three out of the four surveys mentioned, compare nucs and packages. But you seem to want to discount the surveys too.
I love this one. Since I learned to make my own bees- I have bought only 3 packages since 2009. I have increased my numbers from 6 colonies then to over 30 not including the 10 a year going out the...
And you can add our survey to this list-
Prince William County Beekeepers- A total of 68% of package started hives survived the first winter whereas 83% of nuc started hives survived this first...
NO actually- these came a week later and not the same supplier. They should have pushed the order back IMHO
Glad you made out well.
There were several loads of packages coming in to Northern Virginia. The late March packages that came in to Virginia which were packaged during the time GA experienced a real drop in temperature...
Resources yes- Pollen/honey is good. If the cells are capped, no need to feed if on a flow. We drilled holes in the top inner covers and fed with jars. Surround the top with another hive body.
Look to those with live colonies of bees Spring after Spring, those with losses in the single digits most years and ask them what they do.
Seems as proven as any of these prophets out there...
What if your Mother decided not to feed you when she was pregnant?
Not to be rude, but trying to make a point. If you are going to attempt to raise queens - even just one- you have to give them...
A few years ago someone on here posted a pdf of plans. Try searching the forum or PM me and I can email it to you. I have never used it, but I do have this pdf somewhere.
I would hook up with the Montgomery County Beekeepers or another local group.
These folks are in Montgomery County and sell equipment and bees

There is also VA Bee...
We have had bees at a winery and vineyard for years with no problems. Crush time when they crush the grapes is the biggest issue, both bees and yellow jackets are attracted to the process. At least...
Then use individual nuc boxes. They will work just fine in your area.
I am a huge fan and have had great success with MPs methods. I started with 2 colonies in 2006. I have about 28 surviving...
This is one statement I would think carefully about. Small sample size here... the only OW nucs I have lost all had high mite loads as the only sign of loss. Clearly the Mother colony had high mite...
The Tip jar is now activated.
Thanks for sharing. what a great event it was!
We did a successful rezoning for beekeeping and I looked up many laws and codes.

and search for bee, hive, etc. in location will get you farm
Zia Queen Bees state they breed for longevity. Not on beesource that I know of, but on their website.
He became one of our many collaborators (SARE language). One of the more experienced and wiser guides we met along the way. But the grant was written and awarded before we knew anything about...
Wow- years later and we still have to defend our use of one of the only teeny tiny funding sources for Beekeepers. Adam i don't think you have any need to apologize. What was done was not in fact...
