  1. Leaving a medium w/honey on two supers for the winter?

I have no shortage of honey so I could leave a medium on without a problem, just to make certain that they have enough stores.

If I do that, what the heck do I do in the Spring if I find the queen...

    Re: Heat gun uncapping

I went from crush and strain to an extractor and a heat knife.
    I HATED the heat knife.
I tried the heat gun method and I do not foresee going back to the knife!
The frames that I did were new, but...

Re: what to do with so many bees at harvest

I removed two supers yesterday and wondered the exact same thing.
I have more bees than I've ever had.

Buy the glue by the gallon.
    same stuff used by catchmaster.

    Re: Smell of a hive

Interesting that you should mention yeast and bread.
Everyone associates smells just a little differently. My hives throughout the summer give me a hint of yeast or bread dough.
    Right now, with...
  6. Re: Have skunks- can't use imidacloprid a neonicotinoid

I would not suggest using the firearm, as you don't seem to be real familiar with them.
Both of the rifles you described are probably single shot. The one with the MAGAZINE may be a semi-auto, but...

I take what I can, then feed going into winter.

    Re: Slow year for honey

My hives are overflowing with honey (which pretty much means that I have honey stored everywhere!)

Has your weather been good for the blooms or have you been too dry/wet?

Re: Northeast PA. Swarm in swarm trap

I keep hearing that it's too late for a swarm to make it through the winter in these parts, but why not experiment and give it a try?
    Here's what I'd try:
Get your 10 frame deep set up and shake...

They are already side by side on the stand! :)
    No laying worker.
Shake em and remove their hive?

When did you add the shallow? It's been pretty dearthy lately. Perhaps they didn't need it just yet.
  13. Combining a wonky cut out comb hive onto a proper hive

A woman has honeybees in her house and was ready to kill them. I did my first cut out and it was a chore! Somewhere in the process, the queen bit the dust. There was larvae and I figured that IF the...

    Re: Combining hives question again

I don't see why not. If you are sure that the queen and/or LW is gone, then it's nothing more than a deep honey super.
This is one of the situations that I might consider using a queen excluder,...
  15. Re: Goldenrod blooming in Central to West Michigan

I'm starting to see bright orange pollen coming in.
Got my first whiff of goldenrod today at one of my hives.
Stopped the truck today near a ditch with goldenrod that was blooming. Saw bees all...

Re: Catching swarm as it leaves the hive video

    Cool!
When I saw the length of this video, I figured "No way. I'll just watch a few minutes and see where it goes."
I watched the whole thing! :)
  17. Re: Goldenrod blooming in Central to West Michigan

I drove from Minneapolis Minnesota to Flint Michigan and marveled at all the Goldenrod blooms on the trip. Seems Wisconsin and Indiana had more than Michigan, but we're getting there!

Re: a little tip on sealing ply-wood boxes

You could, theoretically, replace a super every year and be out nothing but a weekend of woodworking instead of watching re-runs of "Friends."

    Good job!

What's the purpose of freezing those frames? Wouldn't sealing them in a plastic tub and storing them in a basement suffice? ::: shrug :::

    Re: Goldenrod honey value

My first experience with Fall GR was last year.
I, too, thought the smell was great. I didn't equate it to sweaty socks at all.
I'm willing to ship a pair of mine for anyone to compare. :D

That's what I experienced last year after the dearth. The soybean blossoms were a wonderful sight and then the GR started and the pollen/nectar really came in.
