  1. Re: How is the rain and cold weather affecting flow in Mid-Atlantic region

Attended the local association meeting on May 21st and the state inspector had stated this was the worst year in the past 60 years!! Recommendation was to feed.

    Re: Oxalic acid fogger

Do a search for a thread from 2005 called "oxalic acid in a fogger", gives mixture ratios http://www.beesource.com/forums/showthread.php?204835-OXALIC-ACID-IN-A-FOGGER
  3. Re: Upper entrance and entrance between hive bodies

Can you attach a small block of wood under the hole to serve as a porch, or perch.

    Re: Diatomaceous earth

According to Wikipedia, for DE to be used for pest control, it can't have been heat treated, as it is for filtration.

    Re: Allogrooming Is Here!

Beepro, I don't know what your west coast bees are doing; when I try to go to the link, Youtube asks me to sign in and prove I'm over 18 years of age to view content. Shame on those bees

    Re: Wrong Foundation

The question is, did you get both from the same supplier and who.
I doubt an easy fix, but have you tried snipping individual wires and then slicing the wax? Possibly have to make some kind of jig...

Re: Ants and left over frames.

Turn the frame upside-down and wash out the uncapped cells, then install frame in hive. Next time, store partially capped frames in freezer for later use.

Re: Ants and left over frames.

The uncapped liquid may not be cured honey, higher in water content, so it is starting to ferment. Why not scrap the caps off the capped cells and put the frames a good distance from the hives,...
  10. Re: Just finished building my hive stand for the garden

Consider not only the wobble and rust of vertical leg, but the threaded connections are not galvanized and the wall thickness is greatly reduced.

Re: Squishing Beetles - fun or useful?

I just had a thought, and you know that's a rare occurrence; remember Rodale's Organic Gardening? They always pushed gathering whatever bug was plaguing you and grinding them up in some water,...

Re: Bees on one side of hive and moving slow

What is the orientation of the hive? Maybe they were clustered there because that side was warmer.

    Re: Bees Reducing Their Entrance

This makes me think that not closing off a screened bottom board in winter is detrimental to the colony.

    Bees Reducing Their Entrance

I have a hive that the lower entrance is about 4" wide. In the fall, as I approached it from downhill, I saw what I thought was moth mess hanging down obstructing the entrance. Upon taking a hooked...
  15. Re: Creating a Preemptive Swarm; The Taranov Manouver

Frank, a good explanation of the procedure and a good idea to combine with a Snelgrove board. Last year I used the target box to support the ramp, so the bees hived themselves.
    Might mention the 4"...

Thanks, Richard, I was hoping you would post. I probably wouldn't live long if I were a chemist and my patients wouldn't live long if I were a doctor.

    Re: Vaporizing wet OA

Not a chemist, but there is a process to drive water out of baking soda to make washing soda that would probably do the same for clumpy oxalic. Bake the oxalic in the oven on a cookie sheet for one...

A study done by Kraus and Velthuis in 1997 and cited by Z Huang states that varroa reproduction is greatly reduced when humidity is above 80%. The reason for the late season effect of failure of...

Re: Solar wax melter design with light bulbs??

There was a thread, not too long ago, talking about the high efficiency of using steam to recover wax from brood combs; you won't achieve that with dry heat.

  24. Re: How to know if honey is bee original or mixed with Sugar?

  25. Re: Are cedar shavings harmful to bees in a quilt box?

I used cedar shavings last year on a couple of hives with no problem, and on all hives this year. Thus far they haven't absconded and should have no problems with moths.
