  2. Re: Amount of Oxalic acid to vaporize per Warre box?

    1 gram is just fine.
  3. Sticky: Re: CCD/Neonicotinoid Data (Studies, Articles, Links)

The difference is landscape. We don't have the open country and wildnerness you have. We are crowded here and little to no nature is left. Also rain and ground water is different here.

    At the time...
  4. Sticky: Re: CCD/Neonicotinoid Data (Studies, Articles, Links)

No, of course not. In this case shown above that are pictures from the poisoning incident some time ago. Bees were tested in the state labs and they found clothianidin as the causing pesticide. Bayer...

A good beekeeper can make up for a lot of problems. And you are a good beekeeper, Michael Palmer.

I visited a friend some days ago, he's a master beekeeper (and professional beekeeper, 3rd...

We had a lot of rain, too much rain this year, so supers were filled only twice....
  7. Re: Jan Dzierżoń (Johann Dzierzon) - true father of beekeeping

Oh, we do a lot of hay, too. Hard wakka in the hot summer sun.

Winter is coming soon, maybe you have some spare time then. Use your not so new anymore GoPro action cam to take the pictures of...

Re: Let's talk about lega vaporizer unit

    I'd wait a little longer.
  9. Sticky: Re: CCD/Neonicotinoid Data (Studies, Articles, Links)

Do you feed your cell builders and supporting colonies? I mean, during the season.
  10. Sticky: Re: CCD/Neonicotinoid Data (Studies, Articles, Links)

    Johno,

that's true. But bees forage for corn pollen here on a regular basis. I already posted pictures and videos on beesource some time ago.

    Neonicotinoid-contaminated pollinator strips...

On the book shelf, oh yeah, of course. Make scans of the relevant pages of each book, please, e-mail it to me. Thanks.
  12. Re: Jan Dzierżoń (Johann Dzierzon) - true father of beekeeping

Can you really ignore the work done by David Heaf et al. on the subject of small cell in old literature?

    Wishful thinking.
  14. Re: Jan Dzierżoń (Johann Dzierzon) - true father of beekeeping

The first inventor of a moveable frame was a Russian, his name was Propokovitch. He used frames in his honey chambers exclusively. Sure he didn't inspect the honey combs! So frames were invented in...
  15. Re: Why so much wax while raising queens Nicot style?

Staple a plastic queen excluder to one side of the frame that holds the cell bars. That will help in a nectar flow or when other circumstances make the bees making wax in a starter.

    Usually I...

Re: Swarm Control Made Very Easy Apparently

All we use here are Buckfast bees. Swarms no, big populations yes, even bigger crops yes. Preferes to store honey in fresh comb = distant to the broodnest yes. Means broodnest doesn't backfill with...
  17. Re: Warre Brood comb transplant.. my concerns

    I second that.

Strengthen the strong, get rid of the weak.
  18. Re: Hive designs and their advantages and disadvantages

Even in an unlimited broodnest (in a Dadant) they use 8 combs maximum for brood before winter, filling up the other combs with winter stores. One comb, full of honey or winter food, holds 4 kg/8.8...
  19. Re: Hive designs and their advantages and disadvantages

After the last harvest of the season, I remove all supers. I also remove all brood combs except one open brood comb. I then give 11 frames with foundation, making it 12 frames in total, feed until...

  21. Re: Hive designs and their advantages and disadvantages

Being relatively close to the coast we have a more maritime but temperate climate. I am living a sheltered location, which is why we usually have here much warmer weather than in the rest of Germany....

  23. Re: Hive designs and their advantages and disadvantages

In fact most of my hives have deep bottom boards (without the slatted rack => not necessary). I need those deep bottoms to migrate the bees on long distances. I use the flat boards for my nucs and...
  24. Re: Swarm control, have we been doing it wrong?

So how do you distinct a non-swarmy hive from a swarmy hive? What's the difference between a swarmy bee and and a non-swarmy bee?

The difference is, that queens from strains/races of non-swarmy...
