The polyurethane hives are said to be of better quality. Major advantage is that painting isn't needed, and that they have a smoother inside, which would make cleaning easyer. They are also said to...
Not yet. But I'm planning to buy them these winter - the ones from the finnish supplier that is.
A friend of mine bought some used ones last year and they work very well. The inside has to be...
As far as I know, bees start chewing down the hive bodys somewhere around 90 kg pr cubic meter.
My newest hives are from Finland, seen in their catalog p 14 on www.paradisehoney.fi. They come in 4...
The styrofoam-hives used here has a density of 100kg pr. cubic meter. The durability ar pretty high, some of mine are more than 20 years old (bought them used).
Their "natural enemies" is wax...
The "R-value" is insulation, or?
I use styrofoam/polystyrene hives and som wooden hives. Most commercial beekeepers here in the northern part of Europe use styrofoam - They are light and longlived.
Don't know if they are that great as hives. For my country i would guess, that they are a little hot in the sommer at condensating at wintertime - but that's just a gues.
The french company Nicot makes plastic hives too. www.nicotplast.com
I have only tried their top feeder, but for that purpose the equipment was good and rather high quality.
Heating frames with capped brood (no bees - and open brood) can kill varroa in the cells as they are a bit more sensitive to increased temperatures than bee brood.
You need a incubator of some sort....
The cover is always in use.
Condensation can occur but as the lids is made of polystyrene (as the boxes)they are well insulated. Many poly-hive types has a ventilated lid/cover and slotted...
RonS and Riki got it quite right...
The plastic sheets are used as inner cover in poly-hives. I think the main purpose is to keep the bees from propolising the lid hard to supers/brood boxes. ...
Some of you might find the varroa-articles on this site interesting.
Based on this research the majority of danish beekeepers (not only the hobby-folks)use formic acid, OA and drone brood removal.

All my boxes are glued from 2 or 3 boards, as the dimensions needed for hives are impossible to find here and even more impossible to pay...
Use tounge and grove or some other "gluing profile" to...
I agree. Most beekeepers are unlikely to detect this, as we allways stops searching for the queen when we found her.....

Trickling OA is (very) much safer to the beekeeper than spraying...
For trickling large numbers of hives adjustable syringes (used by farmers)is great. I use a 50 ml syringe that gives 1-5 ml pr....
My solar wax-melter is a former refrigerator from a shop (used for cola etc.). It has a glass front a temperature builds op rather well. It has to be fitted with a stainless steel tray that covers...
Hobie: You will find it in the summer 2006 newsletter...
With these mite counts in my hives in my country, I would say that treatment wit OA is nescesary as soon as possible.
Less than 1 mite dropping pr. 24 h and you surely are on the safe side - more...
Well.. If you put a swarm of AHB in his yard and get the result on video - I might give you two jars...

I would expect H2 to break down during next season or winter...
Swarming (which would be natual if it's a strong colony) would reduce the varroa level in the swarms for the next winter -...
I normally use a high pressure washer to get rid of wax- and propolis-remains. Be careful not to damage the wood...

Are these mite droppings "natural background" or the result of some treatment?
Reseach on IPMG from my contry is saying:
Varroa population = mite dropping (pr.24 hour) * 120
For wintering...
Well I thought, I was so clever with this one....
It look as if I wasn't - and that this top wasn't either..... :D

Could it be former slatted bottom racks, that has been rebuild for the use as tops...? - just a guess...

You has to disinfect before your equipment is safe.
Scorching works, but is unreliable as it doesn't get in to cracks and joints - and there are much better and safer ways.
I would dip in lye or a...
