Does anybody have advice about taking care of an ant problem? I noticed sawdust around a single super colony which I had started 3 weeks ago from a swarm. Upon closer observation I saw a steady...
I normally only have a sharp burn for a few minutes. Sometimes, if I am stung in a muscle, the muscle is sore for a day. Multiple stings (over 25) make me ill and lethargic the next day. That has...
Hello,
Much as I enjoy the forum, I have not been able to read it much in the past months because my flock of 120 ewes has kept me very busy over lambing season. However, since spring varroa...
I certainly don't now where the flowers are, but my bees were bringing in yellow pollen today. I am located in central Southern Ontario.
For some reason smoke seems to have a calming effect on bees. Since I am aware of this I prefer to smoke them and wear a minimum or no protective gear for convenient working as well as to stay on...
It is interesting, cow pollinator, that you say your bees recognize your work truck. I know that animals (now maybe insects) have an uncanny ability to recognize their herdsman's vehicle - my tenants...
We need to remember that bees act as colonies and not as individual bees. They must constantly be making decisions with some means of comunicating to one another in the maintainance of the hive or...
Interesting responses so far. Several experiences have made me wonder. Last fall I was feeding syrup on the deck railing and could have bees all land over my body while I refilled containers, yet I...
Do bees get to know their handler? I keep my bees close to buildings where I can easily inspect them as I go about farmwork. They will even land on me occasionally if I linger in their flight path....
I would not use pressure treated wood. Since honey is a food product and bees are living creatures I would be very careful to avoid using anything toxic in hive construction or honey handling...
Ravenseye mentioned using oil based paint. Are there some opinions on oil vs. latex?
I,ve discovered that basswood which I cut from my own trees works well for frames. Unlike pine you can push together tight joints without splitting the wood. Bassood has the ability to be...
A year ago when I bought my first Canadian Buckfast bees I thought the stings were more painfull than previous stings which I had received.(like having jalopena juice dabbed on a cut). The duration...
It is interesting that you say that you seem to have more queenless hives with dragonflies around. I am having a bad problem with losing queens and colonies unable to raise new ones.
I've found fairly dry lawn grass clippings work well. Fine wood shavings or slightly damp finely-chopped straw also work.
I've noticed dragonflies around my hives the last few days. I am concerned that they might deplete my bee population. Has anybody suggestions on how to dispose of them?
While the subject is still warm could some of you seasoned beeks tell some of your success (or failure) stories about trapping bees and having the outside bees later clean out the honey in the walls?
Thanks everyone. I had suggested using a trap to collect the bees, but she decided to use an exterminator. Hopefully the bees weren't there long enough to make much honey.
I have just returned from making an assesment of a colony of bees that made their residence inside the wall of a house in the city of Kitchener, ON. It appears to be a worst case scenerio. The...
I thought I had 4 strong colonies survive the winter from my 5 hives when today I discovered that one of them must be queenless with laying workers. The hive was full of sloppily placed drone brood...
I finally did find a Dadant price on such a nuke box with a lid and bottom board-around $21.00. However, I could find no suppliers in Ontario where I am located who carried them. I can make them...
Can anybody tell me what the approximate value would be of a four-frame nuke box with a bottom board and a cover? Someone was interested in having me build several for him.
Here in Ontario I have noticed the same thing-an abundance of wild bees.
On one occcasion I had the novelty of watching a bumblebee being driven back by my honeybees when it tried to rob the...
Could someone provide me with info regarding bees that are not honey bees which are found in Ontario? I see #1 large bumblebees, #2 a smaller bumblebeelike bee,#3 a bee with a shorter abdomen than...
