Re: Help buying a Top Bar Hive

"I’m in search of buying a Top Hive" Since you ordered two packages of bees, I'm assuming that you're ordering two hives as well?

I started with Top Bar Hives having never kept bees before and...

Re: How do you feed honey back to the bees?

Good points but I should have been more specific. I've already crushed and strained a couple of quarts. I was wondering how to feed that back to the bees. I can do what you suggested with the...

How do you feed honey back to the bees?

One of my TB hives died this past week and I have 4 or 5 completely full combs filled with the sugar syrup they were fed last fall. It's capped but doesn't look or taste anything like honey. I plan...

    Re: March Packages vs. Later

Can you still get a March package this late? All I see available now are April packages.

Re: Seized $2.5 Million Chinese Honey

The headline reads, "Feds confiscate $2.5 worth of Chinese honey from Houston port"

Not a good week for bees

I lost one of my two hives during the last cold spell. This week there's snow, sleet, and ice today with temps near zero by Friday. The remaining hive looked good last weekend but it's going to be...

Re: Can winter bees eat hard candy?

:lpf:[QUOTE=Rader Sidetrack;1215897]I suspect that you will need to remove all the wrappers first.:

  8. Re: How many if you place a swarm trap or two in your bee yard?

I put one up last year in my yard. Saw the bees checking it out. Then they swarmed and left. Never saw them again.

    Re: Vegans don't eat honey?

Along that line of reasoning then steak should be OK for vegans because cows are plant products too.

    Vegans don't eat honey?

I offered a lady at work a small jar of honey. She said that she was vegan and didn't eat it. I knew vegans didn't eat animal products but honey was a surprise to me.

    Re: Greetings from NC!

Welcome aboard! Do you have any problems with bears tearing up your hives there in the mountains?

Re: Ever move a hive into the basement?

I wanted to move one of my hives into the garage but the wife said that if I did that I'd be staying out there with them.

    Re: Saw pollen today!

Temps in the 50's this weekend and the bees were bringing in pollen here in Raleigh. I saw several trees blooming that resembled a cherry tree but not sure what they were.

    Re: Bumblebee Colony

I'm surprised that they would be active in Michigan during January. Had something disturbed the nest previously?

    Re: Dead out now what

I would not recommend using mothballs on honeycomb. It permeates the comb and it's toxic to honeybees
  16. Re: Quick and East Bee Watering Feature - Any Suggestions?

Take an old cotton cloth, like a towel and stick one end of it into whatever water container you want to use. Leave the other end draped out like a wick. The water keeps the cloth soaked and the...

    Re: bee hive

That looks more like a yellow jacket. They nest in the ground (at least on the east coast). This is more likely the critter.

Re: Is this Deformed Wing Virus?

I didn't think it looked like DWV but I'm no expert. Still, the wings look awfully short compared to the rest of the bee. Maybe she just got fat sitting around with nothing to do.

    Is this Deformed Wing Virus?

I found this almost dead bee sitting outside the hive yesterday. It's wings look short compared to the rest of the body but they don't look deformed.

    Re: New to site...1st ?

One of the best things about a top bar hive is having an observation window. You'll miss out on a lot by not being able to see inside without disturbing the bees. Everything else looks good.

    Re: New to site...1st ?

The bees in my top bars can't get into the top of the hive from inside the hive but they can access it from the outside. In the summer when it's hot and they're outside bearding a lot of them will...
