Re: Stop the madness!!! Robbing is real

When I feed, I feed at dusk and only enough for them to down during the night time hours. Even then, if you add any smells to the feed it will encourage robbing behavior.

    Re: Stink Bugs?

I have a number of Daddy Long Legs hanging out on the hives but it only appears the hives are the local “hot spot” to meet and hang out. Lots of pro-creation, no evidence of harm.

Re: Common mistakes or other topics for a class.

When removing and inspecting a frame to leave it in the original orientation or rotating it on it's end. Picking up the habit of rotating a frame so it lays flat may creates problems for...

Re: Poor little dudes never had a chance!

I've got one hive that has more drones and drone brood now than they had in the spring and they're queen right. It's going to take half the hive a full week to boot all the boys out the door.

Re: What is up with this? Really, upside down?

One of my hives has built something similar as they are moving into a new foundationless super, not so much upside down, more like burr comb on the bottom bar.
  6. Re: Help! Need to move two hives in Hampshire IL Area

If close to the ground I'd just strap everything together and use a hand truck/two wheeled dolly (strap eveything to the dolly too).
Otherwise you're stuck with disassembly and using some means...
  7. Re: Thesis documents broad scale adoption of VSH lineage by queen breeders

A bit more anecdotal evidence but I received two packages this spring and split them once they built up. The donor hives retained the Italian queens while the splits received two locally bred VSH...

Re: Feral Hive Continues to fall

Since they are obviously being stressed, I wonder if putting the "falling" pieces in a bait box could entice them to move in? If I remember the previous post correctly, the nurse bees were staying...

    Re: Foundation Less Frames

Same concept as wiring but using fishing line, some go straight across between the holes in the side of the frame, some make an "X" or two depending on the frame size. It adds more stability to the...

    Re: Foundation Less Frames

I'm going foundationless and the frames I use have a 45 degree bevel on the top bar (Comb Guide Top Bar by I believe Kelly). I went foundationless last year and so far the bees build right on the...

Re: My first year beekeeping enemy

I see the bees go after SHBs all the time but I've never actually seen a SHB killed. Can the bees actualy kill the beetles on a regular basis?

Had a hive doing exactly the same last night. A mass of bees hovering in front and over the hive while a couple of doz were washboarding. No one too excited except when one of the orientating bees...

Re: Hives in a circle for varroa?

How would varroa know if it should dial back its paracitic behavior because it was occupying a single hive or pursue host distruction because there was multiple hives?

Re: Are they drinking the neighbors' Kool-Aid?

I did hear/read about bees finding some of the discarded coating for M&Ms and storing an interesting array of colored honey.
  18. Re: Not seeing much discussion on harvests- how's everyone doing?

Southern IL, the girls are doing OK but all the early cool, wet weather seemed to be detrimental. Like cg3 I'm not seeing much to write home about. Hopefully fall will better.

    Re: Trying out foundationless

Facing south has more to do with "solar gain" for the cool morning start; most of mine face east, catch the moring sun and do fine. Winter north winds are also a consideration but not this month.
