  1. Re: Beginner-What if I just let them swarm?

Welcome! Even though you live in the country, you should be worried about where they go, especially if they choose a cavity in your house/closes neighbors, garage, barn, or out houses. If you don't...
  2. Re: Hive check time. 15 degrees though.

PUT the HIVE TOOL DOWN and walk away:D I think it would be too cold to remove that top box (assuming it is empty), because then the cluster would be in the next box exposed to the air? But then again...

    Re: Mann Lake 5-frame nucs

What about the thickness? Is it the same as the old?
  4. Re: Unfortunately starting over with a step ahead

I hope my post did not read off as disrespectful, and if it did trust me, that is not my cup of tea . Perhaps treated package bees can be kept treatment free , but since the OP made no...
  5. Re: Unfortunately starting over with a step ahead

Every hive has mites, whether they can be seen or not. The question is how many?, and what level of mites can the bees manage/or not manage, a risk of a treatment free slinger? However, if these bees...

    Re: Mann Lake New Website!

Noticed slight differences on site, but none like the design on their wooden nuc changing :pinch:. hope the dimensions stayed the same. Also noticed that they moved their bargain room to e-bay....

    Re: winter wrap test

Depends on which beekeeper you ask :D. For me, it was a non-wrap test. I figure if the majority of my hives can survive last winter without tar paper or foam insulation, why waist my time and effort...

Re: I will never buy packages again.

Notice me pounding the floor after the statement :D. It was a joke, my point was many hives get diagnosed from afar failing because of mites (which may or may not be true). Which you must have...

    Re: Winter feeding question

I think it was a good move on your part to remove #4. Most likely honey was moved down. I know the sugar was insurance, but with #3 full of honey?, it may just get hauled out, with the newspaper...

    Re: I think I've got a problem..

Something that likes to eat bees definitely? Why are the bees in parts? I second TalonRedding's question, is that a landing/bottom board?, and what is all that black stuff? Tell us, tell us, tell us,...
  11. Re: Have not even started and already discouraged...

[QUOTE=BernhardHeuvel;1200157]People have a rather blurred view on what evolution is. Also most people try to breed bees, but in reality you are breeding mites not bees. It is a co-evolution.
    Also...

Re: I will never buy packages again.

They must have died from mites, what were your counts when you treated :lpf: What did the other five hives look like? What about the dead clusters, or were there any? Also, why did you anticipate...

    Re: winter wrap test

Another reason, & more data , that supports my non-wrapping/insulating the sides of my hives. Unless, it is a baby nuc ;). It really is about the bees "inferiority"/health, & the multitude of...

Re: Deadout Diagnosis - With Pics

I believe this is only unwise if you do not screen off all entrances & exits to the hive.
If not any remaining honey cells will most likely be robbed, and an invitation for rodents :D

    Re: Drumming a trap out

Learn something new everyday . Things to consider, if it is not warm enough outside the hive for an extended period (flying weather), will they exit the warmth of the hive (walls/floor)?,...

    Re: Drumming a trap out

Light drumming? As in hitting on a wall and hoping they come out the entrance & exit? I will have to read up on this method ;) In my experience there is nothing accelerated about a trap out. By the...
  18. Re: Treatment free, is it really that easy

"I'm treatment free..right up until the time I have to treat.
But if I've done my job, I can sustain without it."

Priceless,, nothing in life is easy.
  19. Re: When to do whAt with over wintered nucs?

I would follow the advice of post#2 & #8, great advice. Let the bees tell you when it is time! If you are watching closely, you shouldn't miss the timing, especially after you start feeding them.

    Re: BeeHive Deadout?

What does the first deep look like? I do not think you have much crossed comb, but burr comb for shure, and comb built where frames should be (foundation less:D). Moldy bees is not a good sign :o,,

  22. Re: To be treatment free, get treatment free bees to begin with
