  1. Re: Southern Illinois my hives are bringing in pollen by the truck load!!

This is good news. I'm in So IL as well and was going to do a hive inspection today, but I got sick so I'm confined to the house. Thanks for the update. I would like to know where the pollen is...

Re: How many beeks on here are under 25 yrs old?

I am 25 for another few months. I just started with my wife and 3 boys (1 month, 2 yrs, 4 yrs) this past year. We had around 5-6 hives at some point this year, but are down to 2 strong over the...

    Re: Just starting out

I would order supplies and put them together over winter, read more, watch more videos, and talk to more bee owners. Then start next spring, forget everything you have learned and jump in head first....

    Re: Insecticides and fungicides

Like you said it varies by location. There is a lot of fungicide and insecticide sprayed on corn in Southern IL and surrounding states.

    Re: Insecticides and fungicides

This isn't technically 100% correct. GMO's and pesticides are used for different pests many times, not all the time, but many times. There are some pests the GMO's can't kill (Japanese Beetle for...

Re: First swarm today,a few questions

If you do in fact have the queen and she decides to stay, I believe most of the bees will find their way into the hive.

I didnt mean anything by assuming the organic or treatment free. My apologies.

Beregondo, I assume you are a treatment free, organic beekeeper then?

In my part of the world there is no such thing as organic. Bean fields as far as the eye can see. Honey tastes great.

I am really in an interesting position with some of these comments. I am one of those farmers who plant the toxic corn and spray the toxic chemicals and yet I also have bees.

    I almost got the...

As a farmer I have read quite a few articles on the impact bees can have on soybeans. It seems that they have had a nice increase in yields in a few limited trials. I hope in the near future to be...
  14. Re: Getting ready for first honey, question on sieve/strainer

It probably would depend on how much honey he had to extract. We did just one super the other day (for fun with our boys) and we used the 400. We didn't have any trouble with it getting plugged and...

    Re: Laws on bottling.

What I am trying to do is to be able to say I have done nothing but filter the honey for removal of wax or other large objects. That's what my customers are after.

Gm, I kinda thought that. I am not to interested in heating the honey. I prefer to keep it raw. I just thought some customers might prefer the jar to be sealed.

Off top a little. I'm familiar with canning and sealing, but we always use a pressure cooker. How do your jars seal without heating the honey?
