    I had solid bottoms I think around here the screened bottom doesn't offer enough protection from cold winds the harder the colony has to work to keep the cluster warm the more bees die take a look at...

    I am also north of Nashville to the east in scott county. winter before last I wintered 16 five frame nucs in split 10 frame boxes 12 made it. we had that polar vortex come thru with sub zero nights...

    a board ft. is 1in. by 12in by 12in so there is 8 board ft in a 1 x 12 x 8 ft long. 16 board ft. in a 2 x 12 x 8 ft long. a 1 x 10 is actually about 9 1/2 in. wide and a 1 x 12 is actually 11 1/2 in....

    actually I made both and i'm going to use the divided deep for wintering not necessarily over a large colony.

    I made some with 3/8 in. ext. ply sides fits 5 mann lake frames. a little tight. have to insulate the 3/8 outsides in winter.
