  1. Re: What tape doesn't mess up textured sheetrock?

Sorry Drew been at the lake with family.

Imagine by now you are finished or close to it and have figured it out.

    How did it go?

Hi Drew just a word of caution about bay windows. I've made the mistake of opening the ceiling up from the inside and found I couldn't really reach them do to the structural framing of the bay...

Re: Bee removal part successful need advice

You are correct Alex, catching the queen (if she is still there) and caging her in the nuc would expedite the process.

I would also shake or scoop as many bees as I could into the nuc.

Re: Bee removal part successful need advice

If you got all the comb removed from the cutout and the nuc you left behind has open brood all the bees should move into the nuc setup over a couple of days if you put it within a couple of feet of...

    Re: Treated first time today

Maybe, but for a guy with only 2 hives and not wanting to see his bees die and lose his investment in time and money it's most likely the right decision.

    Re: Wall Street Journal---CCD Report

Swarm numbers seem way down here as well, but I'm not sure why. Winter colony survival was good.

May just be to early to say for sure. I know my own colonies are trying very hard to swarm this...
  8. Re: Is this swarm I caught fixin to swarm again?

    Yes.

For some reason they are not happy with their new set up and are about to abscond on you.

Only hope I found is to re-hive them in a different box. If you try to put them back into the same...

Re: What made you decide to keep bees?

They seek me out, I actually hate them by July every year.

Oops got to go, another swarm call.

  10. Re: Bayer Spokesperson Talks about Pesticides and Bees on r/science

I respectfully disagree with my two very knowledgeable friends.

I've read enough that I can't in good conscious ever buy a Bayer, Monsanto or other pest and weed control product for my own use....

Re: What's a swarm good for?

I would move them into 2 deeps and slip in a foundationless frame every other frame. If it's warm out and you have a flow going on you can't hardly give a swarm that size too much room, I would have...

    Re: Small Cell Bees

Not really if you're trying to catch feral bees.

Size, depending on where you are located can be a good indicator.

Re: What's a swarm good for?

Here in a decent year an early primary swarm like that would fill up two deeps and net you at least a med. super of honey this year.

  15. Re: 8 swarms captured, only 1 viable colony so far

1st - no such thing as a queenless swarm. These two more then likely both had unmated virgin queens. Throwing two new swarms, both with queens together will cause them to all abscond.

    2nd - my...

Cleo, your right of course. Sometimes though "free bees" aren't exactly free if you add up all the incidental costs to catch them.

Appreciate all your helpful posts over the years.

    Re: Cheapest effective swarm trap?

    Just my two cents,

I don't set out any traps at all, but prefer to use free ads and word of mouth to get swarm calls by phone.

Then I go collect them, generally catching 10 - 20 a year and...
  20. Re: Caught a swarm. Any clue as to the type of honey bees?

    Nope.

But, when I see a split swarm like that one I think multiple queens and box the two groups separately and put them about 6' apart. If there is only one queen they will all join back together...

  25. Re: Conventional Beekeepers Bashing on Treatment Free Beekeepers

I'm a TF beekeeper but think that the commercial or sideliner beekeepers that treat have a very legitimate concern for damages and we should respect that IF we are impacting their operations.
