Re: What is your favorite hive configuration?

Well because there is only 8 frames the hive will grow taller faster. That is about it as far as I am concerned.

Re: Treatment free, is it really that easy

As long as we are winging it, who is to say that there aren't 40,000 bees in the brood nest to maintain 60000 bees so the doubling is just doubling.

Re: I will never buy packages again.

I have yet to be successful at this. There must be a trick to it.

Not trying to get the last word.:D
  5. Re: Probiotics in prepared patties...WORD from the sacred Mountain

Chlorine is put in swimming pools and your drinking water and it doesn't kill you. It reacts with organic material and then it isn't chlorine anymore. When you think you smell chlorine in the pool...
  6. Re: When are my package bees no longer a 'package'?

How would a hobbyist know their source unless it was the beekeeper down the street? Taking it one step further, how would a hobbyist know the source's source?

Re: What is your favorite hive configuration?

You went through a season with just one deep and one medium? That makes me think you let them swarm. If that is what you are going to do I don't think it will matter what your equipment is.

The mountains look pretty bare to me. How do things work out in July and August?

I thought you had to have papers to move bees around?

    Re: Top entrance size

What you want and what the bees need might be two different things. You can have a wide open entrance if you screen for robbing situations.
  12. Re: When are my package bees no longer a 'package'?

The package is no longer a package when the colony at large accepts the queen. That does not mean the colony will survive winter.

Re: I will never buy packages again.

I think the nearest to perfection a machine could get is today's automobile and yet they all don't run as designed.

Bees don't need perfection they can make up for beekeeper mistakes and they can...

Re: I will never buy packages again.

After building many of these types of machines I would too.

I would expect it would be insulting to all. People can think machines cannot.

I trained operators to their ability and in most...

Re: I will never buy packages again.

Personally I think having so many colonies is the real reason one learns so fast. But not everyone can have so many colonies or wants so many colonies. Surely digging in is required but digging in...

    Re: Freezers

You could mail your combs to Mark in Brasher Falls with the wrong address and it will come back to you if you have a return address label. Might be a lot cheaper than buying and running a freezer.

Re: I will never buy packages again.

Your hypotheses makes sense but wouldn't the situation be much worse on a split that raises their own queen. And, if the bees follow through on the supercedure, again their situations is going to be...
  18. Re: Probiotics in prepared patties...WORD from the sacred Mountain

They don't have to eat the bacteria. There is bound to be some in the bee even if you are treating. So just supply nutrients to the bacteria to help it grow.
  19. Re: Probiotics in prepared patties...WORD from the sacred Mountain

It is a whole lot simpler if you don't destroy the probiotics that are already there. We live in a society that wants to sterilize every bug that will harm us but we don't have the knowledge or the...

My suggestion was certainly not for someone who is making a living on bees. What I say, suggest has nothing to do with someone making a living on bees. Isn't that common knowledge by now? Can we...

Mike a honey producer is not paying top dollar and driving to Wilks Barre to pick up one or two packages. They would be out of business if their replacement costs were that high.

I think it still will be an issue.

I am curious. When you break apart the boxes do you remove the burr comb on the top and bottom bars?
