Re: Should I become a commercial beekeeper?

[QUOTE=squareandcompasses;1063357] It's expensive to start, you will need hives, supers, pallets, lids, equipment to make patties, a truck, a skid loader with 5th wheel or swinger, trailer, mixing...

    Re: help with ross rounds.......

Yep, that's the way I do it. Just gotta watch the ends frames and rotate to the middle to get them capped.
  3. Re: Anyone use or know where I can get the wooden square frames used for comb Honey?

Would love to have a section press. Basswood comb is beautiful. I hate folding those boxes by hand. I switched to Ross rounds. I'll do Ross rounds until I'm lucky enough to find a press. Sell out...

Re: What would you do with this equipment?

We used a boiling lye bath to disinfect equipment. Never had any problems with boxes or frames. Frames came out clean, looking brand new. Did boxes last as the lye will take off the paint. Was a big...

Radiation. Several companies offer that service or used to at $5 a box with frames.
  6. Re: Trying to decide between Top Bar and Langstroth

What do you want to do? Extract honey or just have comb honey? Once you figure that out, it's an easy decision.

Re: Hive check (post them here)

32 out of 36. The four lost were small swarms/splits captured or made to prevent swarming after July. Feeding all hives, stores are very light!! Smallest stores in over 12 years.

Re: Do you smoke them when winter feeding?

I've smoked in high 40's when feeding, better than getting stung, it works.

    Re: Honey smells like urine

Some folks can smell odors that others are unable to due to their genetic makeup. For example, some folks are able to smell the asparagus oder in their urine after consuming it while others remain...
  11. Re: Paint/Stain What do you use/How long is it lasting?

Same here, use very high quality mistinted paint, much better than cheap exterior paint. Don't care about the color :)

    Re: Extra Deep Supers?

[QUOTE=Kenww;1040665]I've wondered about this too. If they can build neat comb under a top bar, seems like they could build it under the frame just as well.

They can and will build neatly under...

Well, I'm just gonna see how my hives do, I have too many hives to do that kind of intervention. We are looking at wind chills of -15 to -30 for Monday. Have several light hives and some small...

    Re: SawStop!

There is an aluminum sabot/billet that is actually fired into the blade when it detects skin contact (Joe here). As Cheryl mentioned we have had an event that I initially categorized as a false...

We have a SawStop out in the woodshop. A bit pricey but we thought it worth the safety factor a few years ago when we stated our custom woodworking business. We carve custom bee boxes and award...

  19. Re: Does anybody collect vintage or rare Beekeeping equipement ?

Not to collect but to actually use, I'm looking for the device that folded the little wooden boxes that are used for comb honey. Kelley's still sells the supplies and I love how the product looks,...

Re: Christmas gift ideas for the wife needed

Exactly, I'm thinking about a new bottling tank this year, one year I wanted and got a 14" chainsaw I could use. I could barely lift my husband's 18" : )

Re: Ethics of selling honey as your own

I only sell my own honey, our farmer's market would also boot a person out selling other folks honey. My reputation is worth much more than a couple of thousand dollars of selling other folks honey.

  25. Re: narrow frames and 8 frame hive box - too much gap?
