Re: Will I notice the dead bees?

I started my hive last year, my wife is also hooked now. We didn't see dead bees until late fall when the hive starts to remove drones or over winter as they clean out the dead on warmish days.
  2. Re: Backyard Beekeeper that develops bad neighbor relation issues ... to the extremes

My hive is in our front yard. I put a letter in each mailbox explaining our plans and if anyone had questions or concerns to call me. Not a single call, close neighbours are happy.

Opened up the hive for the 1st time in Friday and performed a full inspection. I was able to address my primary concern and remove the cross/crooked comb. The bees had eaten most of their stores so I...

As spring approaches I'm wondering what my next step should be. End of last summer I created a problem by inserting spacers between the top bars too...

Re: Why did you start to keep bees?

I love comb honey, and my sons studied bees in school, one of which had a friend who's dad brought in an observation hive. In the end we decided why not, this is our 1st winter.

Re: bees chew out entrance reducer?

They have something. My bees chewed corks from the inside when I closed off a few entrances in my TBH. They didn't eat through them, but you could see rounded edges.

Somehow we lost our Queen after the bees made 6 bars of comb and the Queen laid a healthy brood pattern, it was all looking great until this point. The bees...

Re: Looks like I lost my Queen

Tom, yep that sounds like my hive. I'm going to stay out of it for two weeks and see what transpires, other than refilling the feeder.

Re: Looks like I lost my Queen

Ok figured out why I couldn't upload photos when I was able before. Under Forum Actions - General Settings, I changed the property Enhanced Attachment Uploading to off.

As for the bees, they seem...

Looks like I lost my Queen

Our TBH was going great until two weeks ago there looked like a big drop in the population by looking through the observation window. They had built 4 large combs and 1 smaller comb up to that point...

Re: Bee Hive Manager app for droid.

For those interested, I just started using hive tracks and emailed them asking about support for top bar hives. They said support was coming in the next release in the coming months.
  17. Re: New beek, New TBH, New Package...so far it all looks good, but a Q???

1st Full Inspection after one week. The bees have drawn 5 bars comb from full to just getting started. They are storing pollen, the queen has started to lay eggs which is a good sign, but no cells...

    Re: Hello from Massachusetts

I'm finding a bunch of beeks in town, made a connection with a couple guys who have 16 Hives, and I'm surprised at how common it is...or isn't enough. My family is loving the experience so far. Maybe...

  20. Re: New beek, New TBH, New Package...so far it all looks good, but a Q???

Thanks for the confirmation and good luck. I'm a Melbourne boy living in Boston (or just outside) and would never have thought to keep bees 7 years ago when I was living in OZ.

    Where do you live?
  21. Re: New beek, New TBH, New Package...so far it all looks good, but a Q???

My TBH has an observation window which will let light in. But yes the camera has infrared to film in the dark, at least that's the plan.

Based on some quick searching and reading its my...
