    Re: flat wax foundation

I have been doing that for a year or so. The bees do draw it out faster than a frame with a smaller guide strip. I use a flat sheet about 3 inches wide as a starter strip. They start at the bottom...

    Re: 8 frame langstroth plans?

I make my 8 frame boxes at 13 7/8" width, some make them at 13 3/4"
either width will give you more room for the frames than you are used to if you have used 10 frame boxes before

    those are...

    Re: NUC Box Venting

I had drilled some of my 5 frame NUCs with a top entrance/vent, but I find that the nucs are prone to robbing more of the time.
I now use a 1" shim above the top box with a screened 5/8" vent hole...

empty bottom deep on a strong hive

I have a strong hive that has 2 deeps and a medium honey super on top.
all are 8 frame boxes. the medium on top is full of honey about 70% capped.
the middle deep is mostly brood with some honey...

    Re: 8-frame medium hives

I make all mine the 13 3/4 width as above
One problem I do have is the result of that extra room for the 8 frames.
When I have to transfer a frame of honey or brood to a 5 frame nuc they are...

Re: Looking for a little guidance

I has seen suggestions that you can help fight robbing by rubbing something smelly of the outer cover top
it will help mask the smell of that hive with all the feeding going on. the robbers are...

Also keep in mind that Mike Palmer is doing this successfully in an area that is a lot colder than most of you will see.
His area has occasional winter days that never get much above zero.

    Re: Advice on a nuc.

Mike, you will see a lot of the nucs over wintered in groups side by side. They can share a side wall to conserve heat. I'm not sure the 150 lb is an absolute need even if you divide it by 2 for 5...

    Re: Watering the Bees

Someone on the forum suggested adding cider vinegar to the water.
I tried it and they really went for it.

Re: One weak and one strong hive

is it possible they are honey bound ?
if the honey gets too packed along the top of the frames in the top deep they might not go up to the box above.
if you have an extra deep box you can try...

Re: help me understand the purpose of wintering nucs

Shannon your point about scale is true in some cases but I think an example of where the nuc concept works well is,
the northern backyard beek has two packages from this spring ( from the south ,...

Re: help me understand the purpose of wintering nucs

Charlie, It sounds like you have had some bad luck with the nucs.
I think if you stick with it you might change your outlook on this down the road.
I am seeing a lot of people here in the...

Re: Will virgin queen go around robber screen?

I started three nucs last month that I had to put robber screens on. i put them on within a few days of the cells hatching and they all seem to have mated well. Based on that I would say the queen...

What do you have in there now?
It might be easier to start with some foundation and replace it as they draw out the empty frames.

Adding the followers can't hurt. While they usually will draw the comb the way you expect, having either drawn comb or something like a follower increases the odds you won't have to clean up a mess.

Re: First Hive Inspection.... What I found

A lot of packages can go through that much syrup every day.
