  1. Re: Contract management of 100 hives: what to charge.

I would want to buy the hives. They finance you pay back with honey over 3-4 years... whatever you are comfortable with. I assume they are willing to buy your honey at the agreed price which is...

Re: running single brood chambers for winter

You could put the excluder now and shake her down into box 1. They still have 2 generations before winter maybe 3. That should give them time to reorganize the brood nest. Do it on 25% of your hives...

Re: What to do with a squater?

If you do not start an all out war after you do the clean up... then it might be good to be known as one of those types. It would likely reduce the recidivism rate.

    Re: Ditch spraying

Good on you Ian for taking the time to make the effort. It is so much more productive than moaning and groaning. No one can help if they do not know you need help.

    Re: Failing Queens

Jodie, I believe that the issue of queens simply disappearing is a sign of the times. I has been going on for a few years now. Queens disappear no efforts made by the bees to supercede. Big bummer....

    Re: Canola picture

At $2.40/lb Canadian and 130-140 pounds to be had on an average year I would say that it is pretty desirable. Could be more this year as seeding was spread over a 2-3 week period on account of rains....

Re: Paramount Farms buying out beekeepers?

This will be interesting and likely good for the industry. Keith is right on in this situation. It will take a few years for this to work itself out. They may come to realize that it costs much more...

Re: shipping container for super storage

We have had comb melt. Only the top layer will melt that is the 9th deep can melt. They do sweat a considerable amount. That can be diminished by making screened cross vents. I like them they are...

    Re: Canola Flow in Dakotas?

I think your math is off. Suppose you took 6000 hives. That means it took 6 hives to make a drum. A drum is 620-650 pounds. Basically a little better than 100 pounds per hive. Reasonable money......

  12. Re: Questions for the Canuck prairie / peace river folks

Good idea to get the property into shape. You spent a pretty penny acquiring it... now just a few more and you can use the place for years to come with one of its' intended purposes. Hmmm makes me...

Nope. Feed cell builders and breeder queen hives Caspian solution. The larvae are swimming in jelly. No need to prime or any advantage I could see. As is there is some leftover jelly that the...

Anybody using formic acid is whether they want to or not. Same can be said with products that contain thymol.

    Ben:

We face that same situation. Too many fires today too worry about 2 weeks down the road. So I focus on fire number one until that is dealt with then number two, later number three. Sure...
  16. Re: Just when you thought you have seen everything!

Interesting. Sometimes I see the bees raise cells in the JZBZ queen cups that were left on comb from the previous season. Pheromones, gotta love em.

    Re: Blueberry pollination time !!

Are talking about 150 pounds of honey per average like many prairie guys get? I do not think so. I think in your area it may be more like 60-80. If at $2.50/lb cdn like many are talking about, that...

2 nd annual Auction sale in Brandon
