    Re: Bees Chase Away Swallows

I love to sit and watch the sparrows try and get a drink from the bird bath this time of year.... As soon as they land a cloud of bees comes up from drinking and the sparrow quickly leaves.....;- )

Re: How did you get into beekeeping?

My father in law always talked about how he kept bees in rural Italy in WW2 and way back when I earned the beekeeping merit badge while in the scouts...... My kids saw an ad for our local beekeeping...

I work gloveless but my son loves these when he works his hives..... Good tactile and flexibility as well.... Thick enough to discourage the girls when they get grouchy.... Thickster-Powder-Free

  12. Re: Using a blow dryer to uncap frames - pros and cons

I use the heat gun method when I extract.... Frames seem to extract ok and for me it's nice not to have to deal with processing the caps....

BTW, for full disclosure, I am only a second year beek so take my opinions with that in mind..... The good news is that here in the forum there is a tremendous amount of experience and very few are...
  16. Re: Hello from Randolph, MA (just south of Boston)

I have a "little hive" as well.... My colonies currently are:

1 overwintered mutt genetics..... These have been booming which is what I would expect for a second year hive....
    2 strong mutt...
  17. Re: Hello from Randolph, MA (just south of Boston)

Hard to tell without more detail.... I assume you are in single deeps? In your last inspection, how much have they built out?
  18. Re: Excessive Bearding when weather not very hot?!?

My bees only build significant comb when there is a big flow...... They are foraging now but I will not see any significant flow until the fall goldenrod and knotweed bloom hits....
  19. Re: Hello from Randolph, MA (just south of Boston)
