    Re: my hive inspection apprehensions

I feel your pain Justin. It might look worse than it is though. What I have found is the burr comb that is a problem is usually only between the top bars. This shouldn't have honey or brood in it...

Re: Bees Only Heat the Cluster, Not the Hive?

I think a swarm has about 3 days to find a home and start getting to work.

Re: I've got 1600 lbs of honey, now what?

You might also be in serious trouble if the kid is not your own.

    Re: Lauri is famous

I see. I don't really know why mine came out so good. Possible because it was in a strong flow and this was the only frames they had to draw wax so they drew it down quickly and had enough bees...

Re: Bees Only Heat the Cluster, Not the Hive?

You got it. I misread this page
    http://convert-to.com/246/honey-amounts-converter.html
It still doesn't seem like a lot of heat from 100 pounds of honey.

Re: Bees Only Heat the Cluster, Not the Hive?

I tried to estimate how many btu's are in 100 pounds of honey and I am coming up with about 150. That seems too low. What am I missing?

Re: Tried MB fall harvest but issues, ideas?

I thought the definitions were made long before MB was ever around.
  8. Re: today's mite count on a five year tf survivor.

I was discussing one of his options. I could care less what he or anyone else does. That is his choice not mine.

Re: Bees Only Heat the Cluster, Not the Hive?

Nobody is saying that. I think even if you do not have a science background you can figure out that all the heat generated by a cluster is lost to the inside of the hive first. But does that mean...

Re: Bees Only Heat the Cluster, Not the Hive?

There sure isn't because of all the variables. The graph is in serious error between 50 degrees and up because it doesn't take into account the calories consumed for flight and what heat is expelled...

Re: Tried MB fall harvest but issues, ideas?

Is this an exercise to confuse newbies? From my limited experience these frames look like they came out of a brood nest. Not what we are talking about at all. I am surprised I don't see what you...
  12. Re: today's mite count on a five year tf survivor.

What theory? There is no theory but there is logic. If you assume a hive will die and you do nothing and it lives there is a conclusion. If you assume a hive will die and you do all sorts of...

Re: Tried MB fall harvest but issues, ideas?

Please show me a frame with all this pollen in it. I have yet to see pollen mixed in with a honey frame unless it is mixed in the honey itself and I can't see it. I would like to see a photo if you...

Re: Bees Only Heat the Cluster, Not the Hive?

Bees are not warm blooded animals. So if the temperature of the hive is such that the bees cluster they will have less bees burning fuel to maintain life. If the hive temperature rises so all of...
  15. Re: today's mite count on a five year tf survivor.

Agreed. And if you do nothing and they make it to spring, same conclusion?

Re: Tried MB fall harvest but issues, ideas?

I guess it is to each his own but I have never seen pollen in a frame of honey. Yet I have seen comb that was previously used for brood completely filled with honey. I am curious as to why you are...

Re: Tried MB fall harvest but issues, ideas?

I run all mediums just like MB does. There is no difference between a super and a brood box when all the equipment is the same.
Do I put the supers on the bottom? No. But if I did the top boxes...

Re: Tried MB fall harvest but issues, ideas?

Were these your hives of someone else's that you looked in on? When you are a beginner you have to start with foundation and if you put the boxes on too fast you could have that problem. You are...
  20. Re: today's mite count on a five year tf survivor.

If the hive makes it it will prove that the bees are more resilient than you thought. If you pull the deep out and it makes it what would be your conclusion?

Re: Tried MB fall harvest but issues, ideas?

I think your mistake is that you knew the bottom boxes were full of honey and you put the extracted box/boxes on top of the hive. If you had put them underneath the hive you would have had different...

Re: Tried MB fall harvest but issues, ideas?

What kind of a flow was there if there is brood in the top box? Yes, people do all sorts of things all over the country. Who in a cooler state pulls honey in the third week in October with the...

    Re: Wind break a must?

It is doubtful a wind break would ever hurt. A wind break doesn't have to be solid and most likely will work better if it is not. I have access to pallets so I just create a fence by tying them in...
  24. Re: today's mite count on a five year tf survivor.

    Decisions, decisions...

Up here I have the advantage of the freeze so it matters not if boxes below are empty as long as you keep the mice out. If you have written this colony off you can't...

Re: Tried MB fall harvest but issues, ideas?

Unless you can feed like crazy they are not going to move down. There is no nectar available. If you extracted in August what would you expect to extract near the end of October? The decision to...
