    Re: Hunting the Wild Asparagus

It doesn't grow much the first few year if you plant seeds. It takes one to two years longer that way but works.

    Re: Hunting the Wild Asparagus

I don't think they are that picky about soil ph, but I'm sure there is a limit. They grow on the highway ditches here and I'm pretty sure that soil is acidic. Some lime is almost instant acting. I...

Re: help with a swarm trap

The only swarm that I've ever caught was in a hive on top of my deer stand. It was bad getting it down though since the steps are only wide enough for one foot. It was heavy and awkward. This year I...

Re: Bees and Spraying Fruit Trees?

I have apple trees. I thought you didn't spray anything during the bloom. Do some people spray during? I thought dormant oil before and chemicals after would work? I was trying to be organic and...

Re: hello from nj and some notes on fear

Welcome to the forum! I started last year and bought a complete hive with newly installed bees because it was less intimidating than a package. It helped me a lot. Now that I've had a few stings, I'm...

Re: When to start spring feeding in coastal CT

Thanks. I'll stop feeding. I checked them this evening. Think the population is building up fast. Also the Henbit is starting to bloom. Sometimes have a few hundred acres within a mile or so. Not...
  9. Re: Extra depth deep hive bodies, anybody sell them?

I've been thinking that one extra deep ten frame would be really easy to build from a 1x12 and would probably be the right size for a complete brood chamber in this area. It would be too heavy to...

Re: When to start spring feeding in coastal CT

They are pretty light. First year hives and it was a rough year--too wet most of the year, two dry part of the year, and a very cold winter. I didn't think we had nectar yet. I didn't know they could...

Re: When to start spring feeding in coastal CT

Will they keep eating dry sugar as long as they need it? Our weather is going from 70 somedays to 25 or so some nights. Too cold to switch to syrup. I think?

Re: Grape Farm Offered me A proposal

I'm too new to know anything about the finances, but the fact that they are organic would interest me. It's pretty much unheard of here. I only know of one organic farm here and it's just a few...

Re: how to expand brood nest HELP

Welcome to the forum! I've only had two hives for less than a year so don't have any advice for you. I'm sure someone qualified will help you. How much honey do you average now?

    Have you been to...

    Re: Maximilian Sunflower

Just realized that this is an old thread. Really like to know if the bees worked the Maximillian? I'm actually using them for other purposes, but I was hoping the bees would like them. They have lots...

    Re: Maximilian Sunflower

Maximillion is not a typical sunflower. It's a native plant with very tiny seeds. It's actually perennial. I planted some last week. Don't know if bees like it. Wiki says insects like it.

Re: Treatment Free and Foundationless Questions

I measured 10 cells and then 30 and divided by 3. They seem to be 5.01 with my cheap calipers. Is that within the margin of error for small cell or closer to large cell? Thanks!

Colleen, were those the MNH? Their population really explodes. I should have split. Lost a big swarm about July. I just got them in April. They are doing fine though.

    Re: Amazing flower....

Maypop overwinters in MO. I believe it's related. The flowers look similar. I have but it's only 6 inches tall. Planted it last fall. It's from Oikos tree crops.
